Top Five Innings Of Sourav Ganguly

“On the off side, first there is God and then there is Sourav”: Rahul Dravid “His batting is a unique mix of touch and power. When he plays those drives, it’s all touch, all elegance. Timing is his gift. He has the ability to not only clear the ropes but even the stadium. Against spin, my god, he is really a murderer! One thing I’d love to have from his game and his ability to clear the ropes at will”: VVS Laxman Dada always had the gift of timing. Over 7000 test runs and over 11000 ODI runs is a phenomenal achievement. But, Sourav Ganguly’s legacy is much more than that. For all of his fans there would be only two types of cricket followers, Dada fans and the rest. Right from the fast bowlers to the media, everyone has kept bowling bouncers at him; and everytime they threw him away, he only came back to make stronger statements, not just at the press conferences but with also his performance. He always let the bat do the talking. His square cuts, pulls, cover drives were butter on Sunday morning toasts. Batting was like God’s gift to this man from South Kolkata, Behala. Today we here at Sportzwiki decided to present you the top five innings played by this former Indian captain. As this section doesn’t draw a thin line between one days and test matches cricket, I will include both the formats of the game. It was really tough combining the best five innings of Dada, but I feel I have done justice. So, sit back, have a cup of tea and enjoy travelling back in time. 141 vs sa 141 against South Africa, Nairobi, 2000: Arguably one of the best ODI innings I have ever seen. This masterclass in which Ganguly brutalised the Proteas bowling was quite a spectacle and is rated as one of Wisden’s Top 100 innings of all time. An innings of unbelievable hitting enabled India to a mammoth 295/6 in the semi finals of the ICC Knockout Tournament. Amazing! 183 vs lanka 183 against Srilanka, Taunton, World Cup 1999:  With the score board saying 4/2, Ganguly and Dravid combined up in a huge partnership which helped India to score 373 , the then India’s highest score in ODI’s. It was an outrageous stuff in which Ganguly killed the bowling attack by hitting 7 massive sixes and 17 fours, rightly a T-20 innings in my opinion. That was the highest score by an India till Sachin surpassed that feat scoring 186 against New Zealand. 239 vs pak 239 vs Pakistan, Bangalore, 2007: It was like as if God was batting at the crease. Never did Ganguly even once looked like getting dismissed. One of those innings you could watch over and over again and you wouldn’t get tired of it, let alone being bored after a thousand times. Very few people remember India was at 61/4 when Dada decided to take centrstage and teach the Pakistani bowlers a lesson of a lifetime. 144 vs aus 144 against Australia, Brisbane, Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2003-2004: The swagger and stylish elegance coupled with free flowing rhythm of tiring the bowlers was a true spectacle. His determination showed the cricket fraternity how to conquer the Australian wave at Brisbane and he did it with nonchalance. It set the tone for the remainder of the series. An innings that lasted a little less than five hours, studded with eighteen hits to the rope in a masterful 144 out of 196 balls, was one of the best ever knocks played by an Indian overseas. He saved the test match with his impeccable batting and shut the critics with his blade. 131 debut 131 against England - First Test Lords 1996: England had scored a challenging 344 in the first innings. India were 29/1 and with the ball swinging both ways, enter the one dubbed as a “quota selection.” He was destined to fail entering a lion’s den armed with almost nothing. Hours later, the whole of Lords give a standing ovation to this left hander. A legend was born The panache with which this Bengal southpaw cut, drove, slashed the English bowlers at will seemed to give an indication of the future. Will he take his chance with both hands or be just a one match wonder? Another century at Trent Bridge and every question was answered by the straight bat. There was no looking back…
