WWE News: AJ Styles Says The Undertaker’s Retirement Was Heart-Breaking For Him

AJ Styles is the one who missed a tremendous opportunity to compete against none other than The Undertaker, earlier this year. As per the earlier planning of the Creative, AJ Styles vs. The Undertaker was supposed to be the WWE championship match for the Royal Rumble PPV. However, the change of planning for Wrestlemania nixed the possibilities of the dream bout.
Going forward, AJ Styles faced Shane McMahon at Wrestlemania 33 whereas The Undertaker competed in a No DQ match against Roman Reigns. The match marked the end of Undertaker’s career after he came up short against the Big Dog. This wiped out the match between these two in-ring technicians.
Recently, AJ Styles appeared in an interview with Record Sports Online where he expressed his disappointment over the fact that he will not get the chance of facing The Deadman, ever again. So, the retirement was really ‘disheartening’ for him to watch.
Check out the excerpts from his comments which indicates how much emotional he was following the main event of Wrestlemania:
“I could tell you, I was emotional because he’s my friend. He and I have got a relationship..both of us have the same friend who we’re very close to, so then he and I developed this relationship without even knowing each other that well.
But, it was heartbreaking, because this is the guy that’s been here for so long, and has shaped the WWE into what it is now. Is he gone? I don’t know, but you would assume. I think there were some tears from fans that they may have seen the last of The Undertaker, and at the end of the day, if he’s done, I respect the heck out of him for doing it his way and doing what he wanted to do in his last match.
He is and was everything to the WWE, and I’m thankful that I got to meet him and have a great conversation with him. He’s a great guy. If he’s gone, if that’s the last one, he will be missed.”
For now, AJ Styles is preparing for another dream bout against Kevin Owens on Smackdown Live. The duo will lock horns over the United States championship at the Backlash PPV. This marquee match between the two pro-wrestling veterans is supposed to be the main event of the night on May 21st.
