As per the previous planning of WWE creative, Brock Lesnar’s opponent at Wrestlemania was someone very different from Goldberg. During his main event match against Randy Orton at Summerslam, the beast created a mayhem leaving his opponent into a pool of blood. Shane McMahon ran into the ring to stop him from attacking Orton.
Lesnar replied back by putting Shane with a devastating F-5. Apparently, that was the seed which was planted for their rivalry which would have culminated at Wrestlemania 33. The plan was intact since Shane mentioned the incident, going forward. He clearly stated that his beef with Brock Lesnar is far from over.
But, the beast himself was not willing to face the Smackdown commissioner at Mania considering that he is not a bonafide competitor in the WWE. Even at last year, his match with Dean Ambrose fell short due to lack of competence from the Lunatic Fringe. Hence, he wanted another big name who would make more impact on the show.
That’s why when Goldberg signed a deal with the company, he was the happiest person with it. According to Dave Meltzer, it was at this point when the beast came up with his own idea to the WWE creative. He convinced Vince McMahon to make arrangements for another singles competition between him and Goldberg apart from Survivor Series.
When the ongoing Wrestlemania angle came up, he did not hesitate to give his opponent a win at Survivor Series. Keeping in mind, Goldberg’s physical inability, he instantly agreed to feature in the squash match regardless how it would harm his own image.
This is what Meltzer has reported in Wrestling Observer Newsletter,
“Brock was able to get himself out of that match [against Shane], which he certainly didn’t want to do, Shane was gonna work with somebody, so he’s gonna pick the best guy in the company.”
As a result, we are given with the trilogy between Goldberg and Lesnar which will conclude at Wrestlemania. Shane is set to face AJ Styles, on the other hand.
