The Great Khali is the only one who has held the WWE gold from India. That milestone and his remarkable debut against the Undertaker have made him a household name in India. It is a rare occasion when you see an Indian wrestler making it huge in the biggest wrestling promotion in the world.
Since retiring from the WWE, Khali opened his own wrestling academy in his home state of Punjab to find out more talents all around the country. His academy also organizes wrestling shows consisting of both international and local performers. We have seen such events starting from this year’s February.
Recently, Khali met Haryana’s sports Minister, Arun Vij to discuss the ideas of spreading wrestling more around India. In the press conference, Khali said that he wants to cater more of WWE kind of wrestling among the youths of India. In his own words, he said, “My aim is to take the WWE kind of wrestling to every city in the country. I returned from the United States last year because I wanted to do something which would provide new platform to the wrestlers in my country.”
Khali’s academy is named the Continental Wrestling Entertainment (CWE) and Khali announced in the press conference that under the franchise’s banner they are holding two shows, next month. From October 8th to October 12th, professional wrestling shows will be held in Gurgaon and Panipat.
“It will be nothing like what India has seen so far. Haryana is one state that loves combat sports. In fact, majority of the kids who learn wrestling from me are from Haryana. What I am doing would give youths platform to showcase their talent, especially when we get to hear stories from far and wide of youths falling into drug menace, at least they have something positive to look towards to,” Khali concluded with the above quotes.
