WWE News: The Punjabi Prison Match Gimmick Is Back In The Battleground PPV

In order to hype up the next Smackdown-exclusive PPV, Battleground PPV, WWE is bringing back the historic gimmick after a decade. The rivalry between Randy Orton and Jinder Mahal has been ongoing for quite some time now and it is likely to end at the upcoming blue brand PPV. To make the conclusion a historic one, WWE is looking to add a major stipulation to this gimmick.

After 10 years, there will be a Punjabi Prison Match at the main event of the Battleground PPV. It will feature two of the bitter rivals as stated above for who will fight it out again for the WWE Championship. Since this gimmick belongs to the city of Punjab in India, it is has been organised in order to attract to the citizens of this country.

The innovation of this monstrous gimmick was done back in the year 2006 which is much similar to that of Hell in a Cell structure. The Undertaker and Big Show were part of this match during the Great American Bash PPV in that year.

The very next year, the Indian-origin superstar, The Great Khali has become the world champion on Smackdown. So, the Indian gimmick was brought back at the No Mercy PPV in 2007 where Batista defended his championship against the Great Khali. Now that an Indian has held the coveted title, once again, it’s the perfect time to bring it back, once more.

The former world champion Khali is also said to be the innovator of the structure. It is basically a cage made of the bamboo poles, all over. There are two structures with the first one being the inner cage with 16 feet of height and the outer one with 20 feet. The outer one surrounds the first one which is similar to the prisons in Punjab.

The rules of the steel cage matches are kept intact in this gimmick with the superstars can pick up the win via pinfall, submission or by escaping. The No Holds Barred rule is also applied to it. Various legends like the Undertaker has commented on this match stating that this is the most horrific structure in the WWE. We hope to see it back on July 23rd when Battleground returns from the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.
