Maria Kanellis used to be one of the most popular female wrestlers in the WWE during her earlier stint. She started working in the company with the role of a backstage announcer. Later, she transformed into a wrestler and started performing inside the ring on a regular basis. With her gorgeous gimmick, it did not take her long time to get the attention of the male fans.
In case you don’t know, she is the last female athlete from the WWE to feature on the cover of Playboy magazine before the company moves into the PG era. She was basically used for the eye-candy purposes and never had the opportunity to hold the Women’s Championship. In 2010, her stint came to abrupt end. Once her WWE contract expired she decided not to renew it and earn a name for herself around other wrestling promotions around the world.
Maria Kanellis’ name became earned even more respect of the pro-wrestling fans by performing in the promotions like Ring of Honour, New Japan Pro-wrestling, Impact Wrestling and more. In all of those promotions, she was known as the ‘first lady’ with Mike Bennett by her side.
Now the same gimmick was taken forward while she made her return to the WWE after seven long years. Quite surprisingly, Mike has also adopted the surname Kanellis in order to show the world what the “Power of Love” can do. With this gimmick, they are supposed to dominate the blue brand in the near future.
According to the reports from Inquisitr.com, fans have speculated that WWE might want to make them debut on the NXT roster rather than on Smackdown Live. This would have helped Mike to build his own identity.
But, then they used to attach the Kanellis name with him in order to make a name using her wife’s fan following. Maria’s popularity will certainly be handy for him whereas the rest will be done by his in-ring ability.
As per their contract, Maria Kanellis has not signed a wrestler’s contract which means he would be working as Mike’s valet, the same role that Maryse is playing for The Miz. But, Mike, on the other hand, will be a regular face from the Smackdown brand who will perform on both televised and non-televised shows.
