This week’s Smackdown was a good show. Comparing to last week’s Smackdown, it was pretty much similar. Not much matches but more promos, but the promos were all related to something, so we cannot say they filled the card with meaningless promos. We also had a backstage brawl which had glimpses of the attitude era. For two straight weeks, the tag team division is missing, it is still not specified why they are not booking the tag teams when WrestleMania is edging really close.
In the opening segment Daniel Bryan and Shane McMahon talked about the situation of the WWE championship. We do not know it was necessary. They did not say anything new, the only thing mattered in this segment was how they came into the decision of making a match between AJ and Randy. But it was all so meaningless, they could have easily make it a triple threat match, they did not take any oaths that it has to be a one on one match at WrestleMania. They should have concentrated on why they are favoring a one on one match at WrestleMania in spite of describing the situation. It could make more sense.
Nothing much to talk about the mixed tag team match, Nikki Bella was really poor in this match. The chemistry between Cena and Nikki was awful. The only thing that was mentionable was Miz’s promo after the match. It was one hell of a promo. It shows why he deserves to be on the main events.
There was a backstage brawl between Dean Ambrose and Baron Corbin. It was great, this feud is getting built up in an excellent way, now it should lead to a Street Fight at WrestleMania. Corbin beat down Dean with a pipe and a Forklift. It is said that Dean Ambrose picked up a major injury, but it is not cleared if this injury is kayfabe or real.
Alexa Bliss was scheduled to announce her WrestleMania opponent but she got interrupted by Becky Lynch and Natalya. Alexa Bliss did an awesome job on the mic, Becky did her part quite well too. The promo war led to a tag team match, Mickie James turned his back at the end of the match. Daniel Bryan announced the WrestleMania match for the Smackdown Women’s championship including all four divas. But the stipulation is not set yet. Mauro Ranallo kept saying ‘these four divas will face off at WrestleMania but we don’t what type of match it will be,’ which is a clear indication for a special stipulated match, it will not be a normal fatal 4 way match. Maybe a ladder match? Speaking of Mauro Ranallo, he addressed Curt Hawkins as Chad Hawkins today. Fans criticized Eva Marie a lot for addressing Jinder Mahal as Ginger Mahal. Don’t know what is waiting for poor Mauro.
Moving on straight to the main event; AJ Styles vs. Randy Orton. It was a great match. It is worthy of being in any pay per view. AJ Styles’ work in this match was fascinating, such matches are gems for any wrestling show. AJ lost the match clean, even though he was presented as an excellent wrestler. So this is it; Randy Orton will meet Bray Wyatt for the WWE championship when AJ Styles will face Shane McMahon only.
Final Verdict – The show was good. There are four mentionable things about this episode; Miz’s promo, the backstage assault by Baron Corbin on Dean Ambrose, the women’s segment and the main event match between Randy Orton and AJ Styles. There are some poor things about this week too, not enough matches, the mixed tag team match especially Nikki Bella and John Cena’s chemistry, no involvement of the tag team division for second week in a row, no Bray Wyatt neither Luke Harper, and silly commentary mistakes.
