The show started as the United States champion Kevin Owens was seen inside the ring. The set was decorated in the fashion of Chris Jericho’s highlight reel. Owens welcomed everyone in the ‘improved’ highlight reel. He said that he was taking the highlight reel over because its original host would never be seen again. He showed the footage from two weeks ago when he destroyed Chris Jericho.
After the footage, Owens talked a little bit about Chris Jericho. Then he talked about AJ Styles whom he said he would beat at the backlash. AJ Styles interrupted. He said that he did not know if he was stupid enough to steal Jericho’s show. Owens said he did not steal anything, everything Jericho could do, Owens could do better.
After they argued a bit Jinder Mahal interrupted. He said that he was supposed to be Owens’ guest. Owens agreed with him. Mahal said that all the Americans would bow down to him after he would become WWE champion this Sunday. AJ told him that he should care more about his match with AJ Styles on that night. AJ Styles and Jinder Mahal was scheduled to face each other on this show.
Match 1 – AJ Styles vs. Jinder Mahal
It was a good match. Another big shock with Jinder Mahal being involved in a match. Jinder defeated AJ Styles! It indeed was a big shock. For the match, it was a good match. AJ Styles was great as usual, and Jinder’s improvement was noticeable. The match was booked for twelve minutes which was mostly dominated by AJ Styles. As AJ was preparing for the Phenomenal forearm, the Singh Brothers distracted the referee and Owens hit on AJ ‘s knees with the US title. Jinder capitalised with the Cobra Clutch Slam and pinned him.
Winner – Jinder Mahal
Match 2 – Breezango vs. The Colons
It was a short match which was booked for three minutes. The match was organised to promote Breezango and present them as the legit no 1 contenders. Fandango pinned Epico with the Falcon Arrow. After the match, the Smackdown tag team champion Usos came out. They cut a superb promo. These guys are cutting really cool promos nowadays.

Next was the official contract signing of a six-woman tag team match at Backlash. Shane McMahon came out first to host the segment. Shane McMahon first introduced the welcoming Committee. Natalya, Carmella and Tamina along with James Ellsworth came out first. Charlotte, Becky Lynch and Naomi came out next.
Before signing the contract, Natalya cut a small promo. The Welcoming Committee signed the contract first. For the face side, all three women cut promos separately and signed the contract one by one. After the contract signing, James Ellsworth spoke for their part. The ladies almost started fighting where Shane McMahon stopped them. He made a match between Carmella and Naomi next.
Match 3 – Naomi vs. Carmella
An Average match. It was boring in a number of occasions, but Naomi’s high flying manoeuvres made it interesting to watch it at the end. Carmella pinned Naomi with a roll up pin as the other four women started fighting outside and it caused a distraction for Naomi.
Winner – Carmella
A promo package was shown to promote Dolph Ziggler.
Backstage Dasha Fuentes was interviewing Sami Zayn where Baron Corbin attacked him and beat him down.
Main Event – WWE champion Randy Orton vs. Baron Corbin
It was a very good match, great portrait for the main event. It was booked for fifteen minutes where both competitors performed really well. Randy Orton pinned Baron Corbin with the RKO ‘Outta Nowhere.’ After the match, Jinder Mahal came out along with the Singh Brothers and attacked Orton. They beat down Orton and Jinder posed with the WWE championship.
