Anil Kumble Stepped Down As Coach In 2017 As Virat Kohli Wasn’t Happy With Him For “Not Standing Up For The Players” And “Creating A Tense Atmosphere In The Dressing Room”

Anil Kumble had stepped down from his role as Indian coach following India’s humiliating defeat to Pakistan in June 2017 Champions Trophy final, after declaring that Virat Kohli had reservations about his style.  The infamous fallout between the former India skipper Virat Kohli and ex-India head coach Anil Kumble in 2017 remains one of the “darkest phases” of Indian cricket.

Former Team India manager Ratnakar Shetty revealed this in his book ‘On Board: Test.Trial.Triumph. My years in BCCI‘, that the conversation regarding Anil Kumble’s exit had started months before and was “taken aback” when former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag informed him about the same during an IPL match.

Ratnakar Shetty: Anil Kumble Was Shocked As Vinod Rai Said The Process To Appoint Coach Would Be Repeated Soon

Ratnakar Shetty recalled meeting legendary batsmen openers Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag during an IPL game in Wankhede Stadium when the latter had informed that Dr Maturi Venkat Sridhar, former BCCI General Manager, had advised him to apply for the role of head coach of the Indian cricket team.

“The events leading up to the resignation of Anil Kumble as coach of the men’s team after the ICC Champions Trophy final in June 2017 showcased the murkiness that had steadily crept into the corridors of the Cricket Centre.

“I happened to meet Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar at the Wankhede Stadium, on the eve of an IPL game between Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab, in the second week of May. I was taken aback when Viru informed me that Dr Sridhar had advised him to apply for the position of the coach of the Indian team,” he wrote.

Ratnakar Shetty further revealed that BCCI’s Committee of Administrators (CoA) had held a meeting a day before the IPL final in 2017 where it was shockingly announced that the process of finding the new head coach of the Indian team will be followed soon. The words had left Anil Kumble shocked.

“I flew to Hyderabad a few days later for the IPL final. The game was preceded by a meeting of the CoA. Anil and Virat Kohli, who by then had become the all-format captain, were to make a presentation on the way forward for Indian cricket, at this meeting.

“Both Vinod Rai and Diana Edulji (Committee of Administrators) were attending. Anil was present physically, while Virat was to participate virtually. Rai then asked me what process had been followed by the Board to appoint a coach for the national team in 2016.”

“What happened next was shocking. Rai said in front of the entire gathering, Anil included, that the same process would have to be repeated soon! Anil was stunned and so was I. I remembered my conversation with Viru in May and told Anil about it. Surely, Dr Sridhar would not have told Viru to apply of his own volition,” he added.

In 2017, less than a year after taking over as the head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team, Anil Kumble stepped down in a dramatic turn of events citing an ‘untenable’ relationship with Virat Kohli.

Virat Kohli Wasn’t Happy With Anil Kumble For Not Standing Up For The Players And Creating A Tense Atmosphere: Ratnakar Shetty

Ratnakar Shetty also revealed the details of the meeting that the BCCI members had along with then skipper Virat Kohli ahead of the 2017 Champions Trophy final saying that the then skipper wasn’t happy with then-coach Anil Kumble not standing up for the players and for creating a tense atmosphere in the dressing room.

“It was obvious that some people did not want Anil to continue as coach. The captain and coach did not appear to be on the same wavelength and it seemed that the captain had the upper hand. I learnt later about a meeting that took place in London before the final of the Champions Trophy, which we lost to Pakistan.

“This meeting was attended by Virat, Anil, Johri, Amitabh Choudhary and Dr Sridhar. Apparently, Virat was not happy with Anil ‘for not standing up for the players and creating a tense atmosphere in the dressing room’, among other things.”

Anil Kumble had termed his relationship with Virat Kohli “untenable”, and in interaction with former Zimbabwean cricketer Pommie Mbangwa, he had admitted that the “end could have been better.” Anil Kumble’s resignation came after India’s one-sided defeat to Pakistan in the ICC Champions Trophy final in 2017.

Shahrukh Khan Of PBKS Reminds Anil Kumble Of Kieron Pollard

Anil Kumble Says Shahrukh Khan Reminds Him Of Kieron Pollard

Anil Kumble recollected his experience of bowling to Kieron Pollard in the Mumbai Indians (MI) nets and said that Shahrukh Khan brings a similar skillset to the table.

Anil Kumble said in this regard: “Yeah, he reminds me a bit of Pollard actually. When I was with Mumbai Indians, Pollard in the nets was dangerous. I used to bowl a bit (in the nets), and the first thing I used to tell him was don’t hit straight. Here I’m not even trying. I’m a lot older now, and the body doesn’t take the bowling anymore. So, I’m not going to bowl at Shahrukh, for sure”.

Shahrukh Khan has played 31 T20 matches thus far, scoring 293 runs at a strike rate of 131.39. With his batting exploits in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL), the 25-year-old sparked an intense bidding war for his services in the IPL auction in February.

Kieron Pollard’s IPL Record: After his heroics in the CLT20 for Trinidad and Tobago, Kieron Pollard was picked up by Mumbai Indians for the 2010 season and has remained with them ever since. He has played many memorable knocks for them and has bowled several worthy spells. In 164 IPL games, he has scored 3023 runs averaging nearly 30 and has picked 60 scalps.

Shahrukh Khan Surprised At Bidding War At IPL 2021 Auction

The Delhi Capitals, the Royals Challengers Bangalore, and the Punjab Kings bid for him, with Preity Zinta’s franchise acquiring Shahrukh Khan for Rs 5.25 crore.

Named after a popular Bollywood star, Shahrukh Khan is a right-hand batsman and occasional right-arm off-spinner. At 6 feet 6 inches, the 25-year-old showed plenty of promise in the 2018 edition of the Tamil Nadu Premier League tournament, where he honed his skills and compiled 325 runs in nine games for a new franchise – the Kovai Kings and it paved the way for his comeback into the Tamil Nadu side.

He made his List A debut on 27 February 2014, for Tamil Nadu in the 2013–14 Vijay Hazare Trophy. He made his first-class debut for Tamil Nadu in the 2018–19 Ranji Trophy on 6 December 2018. He was part of the Tamil Nadu side that went unbeaten all season on their way to winning the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2021.

“Being amongst such stalwarts of cricket, it feels amazing to be here and the inputs have been great. I have been having a lot of conversations with everyone around here, getting to learn a lot as well,” Shahrukh Khan has said about his Punjab Kings experience.

Shahrukh Khan said that he was pleasantly surprised that there was a bidding war for his services in the auction.

“The auction started at around 3 PM I guess, and we were practising at the Holkar Stadium, obviously I had to bat and bowl a bit. So I told our physio that ‘please let me know when my name comes up. I’ll take a break and come and see the auction.’ Luckily my name didn’t come up, and it didn’t bother my batting much. Right after we finished practice and we hopped onto the bus, I still remember sitting on the first seat and my name came up. My heart started pumping, but I didn’t expect it to rise as much as it did,” Shahrukh Khan added.

Punjab Kings went in with the biggest purse for the IPL 2021 auction after having released several of their big names, including Glenn Maxwell. As expected, the Priety Zinta co-owned franchise spent big at the IPL auction, bringing in overseas stars like Jhye Richardson, Dawid Malan, Riley Meredith, and Moises Henriques.

Punjab Kings also signed up Tamil Nadu big-hitter Shah Rukh Khan, seasoned all-rounder Jalaj Saxena among others. After missing the play-offs berth at IPL 2020 despite a strong late surge, KL Rahul-led Punjab Kings will be keen on making it to the play-offs stage in IPL 2021.

Anil Kumble Provides Fitness Update On Mohammed Shami

Anil Kumble, head coach of Punjab Kings, the IPL franchise pacer Mohammed Shami is part of, has finally provided an update as to how the fast bowler is faring.

Ever since Mohammed Shami fractured his arm during the first Test against Australia in December of last year, there is yet to be an official confirmation about his recovery or fitness. It’s been over three months that Mohammed Shami was ruled out of the Indian team but so far nothing was announced as far as his recovery is concerned.

Anil Kumble: Mohammed Shami Is Fine And Will Play A Few Practice Games

However, Anil Kumble, head coach of Punjab Kings, the IPL franchise Mohammed Shami is a part of, has finally provided an update as to how the fast bowler is faring. Anil Kumble informed that Mohammed Shami is ‘good to go’ and that everyone in the franchise is looking forward to him playing the 14th edition of the IPL starting April 9.

“He is fine as far as I know. He is coming to the bio-bubble for the quarantine and he will be out in a few days. I know he hasn’t played any matches since his injury but he is good to go. We are really looking forward to him playing a few practice games and then getting ready for the first game,” Anil Kumble told Sportstar.

Mohammed Shami has revived his limited-overs career in recent months and was picked up by Kings XI Punjab for a hefty price tag of INR 4.8 crore. He has the skills to be effective both at the start of the innings and also in the death overs. He had a fine run in 2019 and finished the season as KXIP’s highest wicket-taker with 19 wickets from 14 games. He also picked 20 scalps in IPL 2020 held at UAE averaging 23 playing 14 games.

Anil Kumble: Punjab Kings Have A Squad Giving Options In Case Need Arises To Rotate Pacers

Having finished the previous season at 12 points from 14 matches, Punjab Kings went into the IPL 2021 auction with the fattest purse among all eight franchises, with a whopping 53.2 crore to spent. They ended up spending 14 crores on Australian pacer Jhye Richardson, while also acquiring the likes of Shahrukh Khan, Riley Meredith, Moises Henriques, Jalaj Saxena, Utkarsh Singh, Fabian Allen, and Saurabh Kumar.

“I think in the smaller auctions, people tend to forget that the options are minimal. Every team wants to reinforce and fill the gaps and since the options are lesser, you tend to spend a lot more on the players. We wanted to have a squad that gives us options in case we want to rotate a few of our fast bowlers. Even our young Indian pacers are exciting. It is a fairly long tournament and the conditions will be pretty hot,” Anil Kumble added.

The former finalists of IPL 2014 have rebranded themselves as Punjab Kings as they are hopeful of a change in fortunes in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021.

Punjab Kings(formerly KXIP) did not reach the play-offs in IPL 2020 despite staging a stunning comeback, winning 5 games on the trot after a poor start. The Punjab-based franchise has only reached the play-offs twice so far in the IPL. The Punjab franchise has never won IPL but was semi-finalists in 2008 and runners-up in 2014. Apart from the two occasions, they couldn’t reach playoffs in other editions. They were 6th in IPL 2020.

The Kings XI Punjab released as many as nine players as part of their retention exercise ahead of the auction. Glenn Maxwell, Sheldon Cottrell, Krishnappa Gowtham, and Karun Nair are some of the cricketers they decided against retaining while they retained the likes of KL Rahul, Chris Gayle, Mayank Agarwal, Ravi Bishnoi, Nicholas Pooran, Chris Jordan, and Mohammed Shami.

Gautam Gambhir Terms Leg Spinner Anil Kumble As Greatest Match Winner

Gautam Gambhir on Sunday labelled leg spinner Anil Kumble as the “greatest match-winner” India ever had as the country celebrates the 22nd anniversary of the spinner taking all ten wickets in a single Test innings at Delhi.

Anil Kumble who debuted in 1990 and retired in 2008 from Tests picked 619 wickets in 132 Tests besides 337 wickets in 271 ODIs. He holds the record for getting 10 wickets in a single innings of a test match. He is the second one to do this after Jim Laker.

Gautam Gambhir: Anil Kumble Was The Greatest Match Winner India Ever Had

Anil Kumble has most Test Wickets by an Indian and third in the world, with 619 wickets behind Muttiah Muralitharan & Shane Warne and has also most International wickets by an Indian and third in the world, with 956 wickets behind Muttiah Muralitharan & Shane Warne.

On February 7, 1999, Anil Kumble became just the second bowler after England’s Jim Laker in the history of cricket to take all ten wickets in a single innings of a Test match. He achieved the feat against arch-rivals Pakistan at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium, which is now known as Arun Jaitley cricket stadium in Delhi during the second Test of the two-match series.

Anil Kumble Picked All 10 Wickets As Pakistan Was At Receiving End In 2nd Test Of 2 Match Test Series

India had set Pakistan a target of 420 runs in the match and the visitors got off to a steady start as openers Shahid Afridi and Saeed Anwar put on 101 runs for the first wicket. Anil Kumble came into the attack and wreaked havoc on the Pakistan batting line-up. The spinner, also known as ‘Jumbo’ first dismissed Shahid Afridi (41) in the 25th over.

After the right-handed batter’s dismissal, India kept on taking wickets through the spinner and Pakistan was reduced to 128/6 in no time. The leg spinner then kept on taking wickets at regular intervals and he got his tenth scalp in the 61st over after dismissing captain Wasim Akram. Saeed Anwar scored 69 but apart from him, no one other could score more than 50.

His effort enabled India to register a win by 212 runs, as he became the second bowler after England’s Jim Laker to take all ten wickets in a single Test innings. He finished with the bowling figures of 10-74 from 26.3 overs.

A legend of the game, Anil Kumble had announced his retirement from international cricket in 2008. He finished with 619 wickets in the longest format of the game. He has the third-highest number of wickets (619) in Tests, only behind Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan (800) and Australia’s Shane Warne (708). Anil Kumble is currently the head coach of Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Gautam Gambhir had earlier said that he got the maximum backing from Anil Kumble. Gautam Gambhir said that Anil Kumble was the best captain he played under and he wouldn’t have hesitated to give his life for him. Giving reasons, Gautam Gambhir said that the type of assurance he got from the spinner was incomparable.

Legendary leg-spinner Anil Kumble captained India in only 14 Test matches but his leadership skill has been appreciated by many and some of them have also termed him as the best captain of their lives.

Anil Kumble Was Bit Like Rahul Dravid Of Their Bowling Line-up: Steve Waugh

Steve Waugh, former Australian skipper believes legendary leg-spinner Anil Kumble was like the ‘Rahul Dravid’ of India’s bowling attack. The 55-year-old Australian said so because India could always depend on leg spinner Anil Kumble to take wickets when the team needed them the most.

Anil Kumble is arguably the best leg-spinner India have ever produced, especially in Test cricket. He is the highest wicket-taker for India in the longest format of the game, with 619 scalps to his name.

Steve Waugh: Anil Kumble Was A Fierce Competitor And Was A Bit Like Batsman Rahul Dravid Of Bowling Lineup

Steve Waugh explained why Anil Kumble was a special bowler while speaking to

“He (Anil Kumble) was a fierce competitor. He was always at you and never gave you an inch. I can’t remember him bowling poorly against us. He was a bit like Dravid of their bowling lineup. The captain knew what they were going to get from him. He was there all the time,” Steve Waugh said.

Anil Kumble loved playing against Australia as he is the highest wicket-taker in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with 111 wickets to his name in 20 Tests averaging 30.32. His best figures of 8-141 against Australia came in the 2004 Sydney Test, where he almost single-handedly won the game for the visitors.

Steve Waugh said Anil Kumble wore his heart on his sleeve and gave his all for Team India as playing for the country was everything for him. A right-arm leg spin (leg break googly) bowler, he took 619 wickets in Test cricket and remains the third-highest wicket-taker of all time (behind Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne).

Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan
Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan

In 1999 while playing against Pakistan, he dismissed all ten batsmen in a Test match innings, joining England’s Jim Laker as the only player to achieve the feat. He is also the only Indian player to have done that till date. Unlike his contemporaries, he was not a big turner of the ball but relied primarily on pace, bounce, and accuracy.

Anil Kumble announced his retirement from international cricket mid-way through the 3rd Test of the series in the Delhi Test alongside Sourav Ganguly who bid the game goodbye in the Nagpur 4th Test.

Steve Waugh Observed Anil Kumble Enjoyed Playing For India And Australia Played Him More Like A Slow In Swing Bowler

Steve Waugh said he never played against anyone as passionate to play for his country as Anil Kumble was. The 50-year-old former spinner always took pride in playing for India and gave his all, irrespective of the situation. The former Australian captain Steve Waugh also shed light on the way Anil Kumble depended more on his variations, as he didn’t spin the ball much.

“I don’t think I played anyone who enjoyed playing for the country as much as he (Anil Kumble) did. It was everything to him. We certainly didn’t play him as a leg-spinner. We played him more like a slow in-swing bowler,” Steve Waugh observed.

Anil Kumble

The leg-spinner used to vary his pace and deceive the opposition batsmen in the air. Anil Kumble would exploit if there was any help from the pitch and make life difficult for the batsmen.

“He had a great change of pace. It was all about variations, use of the crease. He sort of mixed it up a bit. Anything in the wicket like a bit of rough or unevenness, and he was more than a handful,” Steve Waugh further added.

Anil Kumble even went on to captain the Indian team towards the fag end or twilight of his career and was the head coach of the Men in Blue for a brief period too. His leadership attributes proved crucial in Team India winning the historic Perth Test in the 2007-08 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Day-night Test Is The Biggest Challenge For India, Says Anil Kumble

Anil Kumble, who is the third-highest wicket-taker overall in Tests, reckons India will need to embrace the challenge of the pink-ball Test match which will start the four-match Border-Gavaskar Test series in Australia.

If India does well in the series opener at the Adelaide, the former leg-spinner feels the team will be able to repeat their heroics of two years ago where they registered their maiden test series victory in Australia by a margin of 2-1.

Anil Kumble: Biggest Challenge Is India Starting Test Series With Pink Ball Tests

Anil Kumble who has 619 Test wickets in 132 Tests, says that the absence of Virat Kohli is going to leave a huge void in India’s batting. Still, the tourists need to cope with another challenge against Australia in the upcoming test series.

India have played only one Day/Night Test so far in India against Bangladesh, while Australia are veteran of seven D/N Tests and they prevailed in all of them. The Indians, as part of preparations, are currently playing a pink-ball practice match against Australia A in Sydney. Anil Kumble is confident that India will have to work harder once Virat Kohli returns to India, which means the Adelaide Test becomes all the more important.

“Since India is starting the Test series with a pink ball, that’ll be the biggest challenge. If we can stay ahead in the first Test match then India has a great chance to repeat what they did in the last Australia tour,” Anil Kumble was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo during a webinar organised by L&T Financial Services Mutual Fund’s annual conclave The Winner’s Circle.

day-night Test
Day-night Test-Image Credit: Google

“Although with [Steven] Smith and [David] Warner coming back [after their ball-tampering bans the last time] and then Virat [Kohli] missing the three Test matches will obviously be a big factor for India. But having said that, there’s enough ability within the team, be it batting or bowling.”

Australia have won against likes of New Zealand, South Africa, England and Pakistan in day-night Tests at Adelaide. Steve Smith and David Warner are back after serving a one year ban for ball-tampering. They missed the previous test series at Australia against India in 2018-19 where the tourists registered their maiden test series victory. India won 4 match test series in 2018-19 after Cheteshwar Pujara scored 521 runs and Jasprit Bumrah picked 21 scalps.

Anil Kumble: Australia Have Done Well In Adelaide In Pink Ball Test Matches

Australia are unbeaten in Day/Night Tests by winning all seven of their matches since first participating first in a Pink ball Test back in November-December of 2015 against New Zealand.

“The bowling – we probably match our fast bowling to their fast bowling. The batting again matches, [but] I think we are ahead [of Australia],” Anil Kumble said.

Virat Kohli

“So if we can get ahead in the pink-ball Test match – which obviously is Australia’s strength: they’ve done really well in Adelaide whenever they have played a pink-ball Test; so if India can sort of get ahead against Australia in the first Test, then I will back India. But if that doesn’t [happen], then it is going to be a tough ask without Virat as well in the next three [Tests].”

Anil Kumble says India’s pacers having likes of Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah are on a par with Australia’s quicks. Still, the batsmen have to do a good job, especially with the pink ball if India have a chance to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy as Virat Kohli will not participate in the last three Tests.

‘The Umpires Were At Fault For Not Calling In The Physios When Jadeja Got Hit’- Anil Kumble Opens Up On The Entire Jadeja-Chahal Substitution Controversy

Anil Kumble, former Indian spinner and coach, opinioned that he did not see any issue with a spinner Yuzvendra Chahal replacing an all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.

Ravindra Jadeja took a blow in his head while batting during 1st T20I and Yuzvendra Chahal came as a concussion substitute replacing the all-rounder.

Anil Kumble : Concussion Doesn’t Necessarily Mean It Has To Happen On Field

Anil Kumble pointed that the rule has been in force for last couple of years keeping in mind the tragic demise of Phil Hughes in 2014 when he died after being hit by a bouncer during a Sheffield Shield game in Australia.

“This rule has been in force for the last couple of years after the tragic demise of Phil Hughes. There was a push for a substitute to come in when someone gets hit on the head and concussion is a big thing. I know Jadeja did pull his hamstring after he got hit on the head or before he got hit. Whenever he got hit I don’t think it has got anything to do with replacement,” Kumble said at a virtual launch of ‘The Hitman: The Rohit Sharma Story’, written by Vijay Lokapally and G. Krishnan.

Yuzvendra Chahal.

“I don’t think it is Jadeja’s call to ask for a physio. It is for the umpires to stop the game and call for a physio. That did not happen perhaps because Jadeja ran for the single and he continued to play. He was fine. And concussion doesn’t necessarily mean it has to happen on the field. You can come back to the dressing room and then you may feel headache or dizziness. That’s when the doctors will step in and stop. That’s what probably happened in this case,” the former India captain explained.

Ravindra Jadeja was hit in the head in the final over of India’s innings but umpires didn’t intervene and stop the game by bringing in doctors and physios as Ravindra Jadeja felt fine and there were only a few balls left in India’s innings. He continued to play but after going back to dressing room probably felt dizziness and so a concussion substitute in the form of Yuzvendra Chahal replaced him while India bowled.

Anil Kumble Don’t See Any Issue With Concussion Replacement

Anil Kumble reasoned that concussion necessarily may not happen in the field and he approved Yuzvendra Chahal replacing Ravindra Jadeja as he is a spinner like an all-rounder. In case Ravindra Jadeja was concussed during fielding, India should have looked at a batsman as alike to like replacement, according to the legendary spinner.

“But Jadeja had done his part of the batting. So, you look at the other skills he brings in. He is a spinner. That’s why a spinner [Chahal] was brought in as a like-to-like replacement. If the roles were to be replaced, for example, if he was concussed when on the field when India was bowling and if Jadeja had to bat and couldn’t bat then I am sure Chahal wouldn’t have been like-to-like replacement. You would have looked at a batsman to come in place of Jadeja. I am sure Chahal would have been listed in the 15. I don’t see any issue with the concussion replacement,” he insisted.

Both Ravindra Jadeja and Yuzvendra Chahal contributed with bat and ball respectively. The all-rounder scored an unbeaten 44 while the spinner took 3 wickets and was adjudged Man of Match too in India’s 11 run win in 1st T20I.

IPL 2020: Anil Kumble’s Fighting Spirit Can Be Seen In Kings XI Punjab’s Performance – Sunil Gavaskar

After seeing Kings XI Punjab snatching victories from the jaw of defeats, former Indian cricketer and renowned commentator Sunil Gavaskar has stated that their head coach Anil Kumble had a huge influence on them because of which they have come back from an impossible situation.

After winning four matches in a row, Kings XI Punjab are standing at number five position and are still alive in the race of qualifying for playoffs. Well, nobody would have thought Kings would have climbed to the fifth position after they had lost back to back five matches.

While speaking on Star Sports show Cricket Live, Sunil Gavaskar said that Kings XI Punjab has, finally, found a way to win the matches after losing the matches they deserved to take home.

“You know, they have just found the winning way! They seem to have lost that at the start of the tournament. Remember, every time they were close to winning and they went into the super over in their first-ever game and then again, after that they were losing in the final overs,” Sunil Gavaskar said.

For their unbelievable victory against SunRisers Hyderabad, while defending 126 runs, Sunil Gavaskar said that self-belief was their key to success.

“Then, somewhere down the line, they found that key, that takes them to a win and the last few games, they have played exceptional cricket. The last match, to defend a 126 takes a lot of doing, takes a lot of self-belief and that’s what they showed,” Gavaskar stated.

Sunil Gavaskar said that although KL Rahul has not given up to scratch performance with his bat, he has not let down the team with his astute captaincy. He heaped praise on how Rahul is placing fielding and using the bowlers wisely.

“They have been brilliantly led by KL Rahul. KL Rahul has grown into the captaincy role, and though he didn’t score as many as he normally does, he made sure, with his field placing, with his bowling changes, even giving Chris Jordan that 19th over and then trusting Arshdeep to defend 14 in the final over is fantastic,” Gavaskar said.

Gavaskar added that the fighting spirit that everyone has witnessed in Anil Kumble could also be seen in Kings XI Punjab. He recalled that time when the former spinner went out to bowl even though he had broken his jaw.

The veteran expressed that the Punjab-based franchise has also learned from Kumble to come back from an impossible situation.

“Do not forget the role of Anil Kumble! Anil Kumble has been a fighter all his cricketing career, you could see when he went out with a broken jaw and bowled, and that spirit is seen in the KXIP. That is the reason why they have come back from impossible situations and are now in the hunt for the place in the playoffs,” Gavaskar added.

Kings XI Punjab will face Kolkata Knight Riders on Monday and it is a most crucial match for them to enter the top four in the points table.

IPL 2020: Anil Kumble Reveals Reason Behind KL Rahul Not Keeping

Anil Kumble, who is Kings XI Punjab’s coach revealed the reason behind skipper KL Rahul not donning the gloves. KL Rahul was not keeping wickets in the last 2 matches against Chennai Super Kings and SunRisers Hyderabad. KL Rahul, who is also the orange cap holder by being leading run-scorer needed a break from wicket-keeping duties and was replaced by the likes of Nicholas Pooran and Prabhsimran Singh.

KXIP made three changes in their playing XI after receiving a heavy loss to CSK by 10 wickets as Prabhsimran Singh, Arshdeep Singh and Mujeeb Ur Rahman came into the side replacing Chris Jordan, Sarfaraz Khan and Harpreet Brar. But KXIP failed again as MOM Jonny Bairstow scored 97 and SRH skipper David Warner  (52 runs) stitched a 160 run stand for the opening wicket. Spinner Ravi Bishnoi took 3 wickets as SRH lost both openers and Manish Pandey with adding only 1 run.

Anil Kumble: KL Rahul Felt He Needed A Bit Of Break

Despite Nicholas Pooran’s 77, none of the other batsmen contributed more than 11 as KXIP could only manage 132 in reply to SRH’s mammoth 201/6.  Nicholas Pooran kept wickets against CSK while Prabh Simran Singh kept wickets against SRH. Rashid Khan was the wrecker in chief with 3 wickets conceding only 12 runs.

“KL Rahul felt after first few games that he needed a bit of a break. He felt that Nic Pooran can keep wickets” Anil Kumble said.

Anil Kumble: Prabhsimran Singh Shown Talent In Past 2 Months

Prabh Simran Singh is from Patiala and is a hard hitting wicketkeeper batsman. He was one of the highlights of the player auctions prior to IPL 2019 as he attracted a huge price tag of Rs. 4.8 crore, eventually being signed up by Kings XI Punjab. Though he was released during the pre-auction transfer window, KXIP bought him for IPL 2020 for INR 55 lakh.

The 20-year-old rose to fame came when he smashed 298 from just 301 balls in an Under-23 district tournament. He led the Indian team to victory in the Under-19 Asia Cup in 2018.

“We felt Prabhsimran Singh has shown a lot of talent in the past 2 months he has been here. We know that he is an existing talent. We felt that this was the game that we can give him an opportunity. And, Prab is a keeper. So, we felt that if Prab keeps then obviously KL and Nic Pooran can field”

Despite Nicholas Pooran’s quickest 50 in IPL 2020, KXIP were beaten and they are the last team in the IPL 2020 points table with only 1 win and 5 losses and has only 2 points. Anil Kumble felt that Prabh Simran Singh should be given the opportunity as he is a keeper and an exciting talent. Anil Kumble also mentioned that Chris Gayle should have played but he had a stomach upset in the eve of the match.

IPL 2020: Anil Kumble Reckons KXIP Will Have To Bring ‘A’ Game To Beat ‘Strong’ Mumbai Indians

Kings XI Punjab’s (KXIP) Director of Cricket Operation Anil Kumble has stated that his side will have to put their best game against the four-time Indian Premier League (IPL) winner, Mumbai Indians, on Thursday (October 1). Notably, both the teams are facing each other for the first time in the IPL 2020.

Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi will host the match between MI and KXIP. Rohit Sharma-led side has already played the two matches in that stadium, winning one match against KKR.

On the other hand, KXIP will play its first match in Abu Dhabi. Thus, MI might have the upper hand in the game as by now they are well acquainted with the pitch condition.

Keeping in mind the advantage with MI, Kumble reckons that the defending champion is a strong team because they have well-settled batting as well as bowling order.

“We need to assess the conditions, we are entering Abu Dhabi which is a new venue for us. Having said that, Mumbai is a very strong team, we know that. They are a very settled team, they have been playing the same XI, almost the same XI for the last couple of years,” said Anil Kumble in a video posted on the official Twitter handle of KXIP.

We will have to bring our ‘A’ game: Anil Kumble

Satisfied with the team’s performance in the last three matches, Anil Kumble said that they would have to be at their best to beat Mumbai Indians.

“We know their strengths and we will have to bring our ‘A’ game against them. I am really happy with our last three games for the way we have been consistent, so looking forward to that kind of effort again in Abu Dhabi,” Anil Kumble added.

KXIP played their last match in Sharjah where small boundaries have made it easy for batsmen to hit boundaries. As a result, with the help of Mayank Agarwal’s century and KL Rahul’s half-century, Punjab had set a mammoth target of 224 runs.

However, they failed to defend the target in front of Sanju Samson and Rahul Tewatia‘s power-hitting as sixes poured from their bat.

But Abu Dhabi’s boundary is bigger than Sharjah and it will not be easy for the batsman to hit sixes. Anil Kumble also stated that the Abu Dhabi wicket will be different from Sharjah and the team will have to adapt to the conditions.

“It’s new ground, the boundaries are bigger so it is not going to be easy to hit sixes like how it was in Sharjah. But having said that, we will have to assess conditions and adapt,” said Kumble.

Meanwhile, KXIP is at the fifth position in the points table, winning one match out of three.
