Wasim Jaffer Explained Why White-Ball Specialist Hardik Pandya Won’t Return To Test Fold Anytime Soon

Wasim Jaffer, the former Indian opener and full-time cricket pundit has explained why all-rounder Hardik Pandya is far away from getting into the Test circuit. All-rounder Hardik Pandya will lead Team India in the two-match T20I series against Ireland. India will meet Ireland in the series opener on Sunday.

Even though Hardik Pandya is on his way to becoming indispensable to the white-ball squad of Team India, former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer still believes the star all-rounder is far from making a return into the longest and oldest format of the game. Hardik Pandya made a sensational return to the T20I side of the Rahul Dravid-coached Team India after a title-winning season with debutants Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022.

Wasim Jaffer Doesn’t See Hardik Pandya Returning To Test Fold Anytime Soon

Hardik Pandya will lead the second-string side of India in the absence of skipper Rohit Sharma, ex-captain Virat Kohli and injured opener KL Rahul during the ongoing Ireland tour. Under the leadership of all-rounder Hardik Pandya, the Rishabh Pant-less side will play two T20Is against Ireland.

Speaking ahead of the first T20I between India and hosts Ireland, former cricketer Wasim Jaffer explained why he doesn’t see Hardik Pandya making a return to red-ball cricket soon. During a discussion, Wasim Jaffer was asked whether Hardik Pandya can return to Test cricket after becoming one of strong India’s captaincy candidates in white-ball cricket.

“Hardik bowling 15 to 18 overs a day, you don’t see that happening [due to] the kind of back-surgery he had. Will he bat at four or five? I don’t see that happening in red-ball cricket,” Jaffer said.

“So in that sense, he’s far away from getting into the red-ball circuit. So I think if we just leave him bowling four overs or at max 10 overs in One-Dayers and batting at four, five, or six, it will help him prolong his career,” the former Indian opener added.

For the Ireland T20Is, India is missing regulars like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ravindra Jadeja who all are currently in England preparing for the Birmingham Test starting on July 1. These two matches against Ireland therefore might be the last opportunity to try out youngsters ahead of the T20 World Cup in Australia later this year.

Hardik Pandya Has Featured In 11 Tests After Debuting In 2016

Hardik Pandya, who made his international debut in 2016, has played 11 Test matches for Team India. Hardik Pandya last played a Test match for India during the 2018 tour of England. The star all-rounder has featured in 63 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 59 T20Is for India.

Before the recently-concluded series against South Africa, Hardik Pandya had last played for Team India in the 2021 T20 World Cup in UAE. In the last series against South Africa, Hardik Pandya had scored 117 runs but he was not able to take a single wicket with the ball in hand. In IPL 2022, Hardik Pandya had scored 487 runs with the bat and he also managed to take eight wickets, out of which three came in the final against Rajasthan Royals.

Hardik Pandya Has Taken Advice From MS Dhoni And Virat Kohli

Hardik Pandya, the skipper for the Ireland T20Is said that he has taken a lot of points from Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni after he was announced as India’s captain for the series while peaking in a press conference ahead of India’s first match against Ireland on Sunday. He also revealed his style of captaincy and how he would go about things.

India will take on Ireland in two T20Is on 26th and 28th June in Dublin. Most of the players who are part of the squad are non-regulars since most of the first team players will be busy in the one-off Test Match against England starting on June 1. This will be the first time that all-rounder Hardik Pandya will be leading the Indian team, after his IPL 2022 -winning stint with the Gujarat Titans.

Hardik Pandya Has Taken A Lot Of Points From MS Dhoni And Virat Kohli But He Wants to Be Natural And Own Self

Speaking in a press conference ahead of India’s first match against Ireland on Sunday, Hardik Pandya said that he has taken a lot of points from former skippers Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni after he was announced as India’s captain for the series. He also revealed his style of captaincy and how he would go about things.
“Obviously, I have taken a lot of things from them (MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli) but mainly, I wanted to be my own self. My understanding of the game is in a different way, for me, I have taken a lot of good points from them but at the same time, I wanted to be natural and kind of, not be instinctive, I see more (the) situation than I can go with my gut.”

” It is about what the team requires in that point of time, what kind of decision I can take at that point, I focus more on that rather than thinking my gut is saying that, I am going to go there. When you go on gut, it is always 50-50, but I do not believe in that, I like to be practical and I like to see the situation,” said the all-rounder.
Captain Hardik Pandya will be in focus as India looks to test their envious bench strength in the series opener against Ireland, who have not beaten India in 3 T20I meetings so far. The focus will also be on Suryakumar Yadav, who returns to the side for the first time after an injury in IPL 2022.

Hardik Pandya Likes To take Responsibilities

Hardik Pandya also gave an insight into his own game and how he now takes more responsibility. Hardik Pandya scored 487 runs in IPL 2022 at an average of 44.27 and a strike rate of 131.27. He also picked eight wickets at an economy rate of 7.28. He was Gujarat Titans’ leading run-getter in their maiden season.
Hardik Pandya was in good form during the five-match series against South Africa also, scoring 117 runs at a strike rate of 153.94, averaging 58.50 in four innings after the 5th T20I was abandoned after only 3.3 overs due to rain.
“Earlier also I liked taking the responsibility. Now also, I like it, perhaps a little more now. I think that I have always done better when I have taken the responsibility. When you take your own decisions, it makes you stronger. I will try the same reflects in my captaincy, how I give confidence to players and how I tell them all to keep fighting,” he added.

With Hardik Pandya hinting at a couple of debuts for India, it will be interesting to see if the likes of Umran Malik, Arshdeep Singh, and Rahul Tripathi get an opportunity to play.

Notably, the likes of pacers Umran Malik and Arshdeep Singh were warming the benches as India persisted with an unchanged XI in the 5-match series against South Africa. Rahul Tripathi, who was impressive in the IPL 2022 for SunRisers Hyderabad, was not picked for the home series but he made it to the Ireland tour after receiving his maiden India call-up.

Hardik Pandya Said India Won’t Be Complacent Against Ireland

Ahead of the first T20I game, Hardik Pandya interacted with the media during a press interaction and opened up on his mindset as he takes on the captaincy challenge for the first time in international colours.

“It’s a challenge mentally, it is easier to say that we are playing against Ireland but playing for India is the biggest pride. If we want to win the World Cup, every match from here is important for us to reach the World Cup final. The first thing I said to all is that it doesn’t matter whom we are playing, we need to focus on our own things,” Hardik Pandya stressed.

Hardik Pandya Reveals India Will Approach The Ireland T20Is Like Any Other Games

The 28-year-old all-rounder also revealed the discussion he had with VVS Laxman, who is the head coach of the side for this series in the absence of Rahul Dravid. The former India captain is currently with the Test side as it prepares for the fifth and final game of the series against England, scheduled between July 1-5 in Edgbaston.

“We keep the same intensity we generally keep even if we are playing the World Cup or a big series. Again it comes down to mental strength, how better you can get it because it’s not easy in two matches getting yourself on but at the same time we are playing for India and we have to be on our A-game which we will. The discussion between me and the coach is simple — approach the game as you do in any other game for India,” said Hardik Pandya.

Hardik Pandya Opens Up On Whether He Should Be Considered As Future Captain

Hardik Pandya, who was the vice-captain in the recently-concluded home T20I series against South Africa, has slowly made his way into the leadership group of the Indian side.

The all-rounder, however, is not bothered about that, as he instead wants to focus on the job at hand and lead India to victory against Ireland in the 2 T20Is.

Hardik Pandya Thinks It’s A Big Thing To Lead India

Hardik Pandya, who won IPL 2022 with Gujarat Titans on the first attempt, is set to lead India for the first time in the two-match T20I series in Ireland starting on June 26.

“I am not here to show anything to anybody. I have got an opportunity to lead India, which itself is a big thing for me. I don’t play this sport to show anything to anybody. I am good enough.” Hardik Pandya said in a virtual press conference on Saturday when he was asked whether he would want to show the team management that he can be a captaincy option in the future.

“I will see in the future, otherwise more than anything I am just focussing on what I can bring in this series,” he added.

India is missing regulars like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ravindra Jadeja who all are currently in England preparing for the Birmingham Test starting in July 1. These two matches against Ireland therefore might be the last opportunity to try out youngsters ahead of the T20 World Cup in Australia later this year.

Hardik Pandya Wants To Field Best Possible XI And Praised India’s Bench Strength

Hardik Pandya said India would field their best XI but they would definitely want to try out new options as well.

“We want to give the opportunity to people but at the same time, we want to play with the best XI as well. But there will be situations, where we will be giving caps to people. It’s about making sure that when we go into the park, we have the best XI playing. So, that will be the focus,” he added.

India is fielding its reserve players in the series against Ireland and Hardik Pandya said the bench strength India possesses now is a good sign for the game in the country.

“If such a situation arises that we have to send two teams, we are very lucky that we have the bench strength where we can allow the players to go and express and a lot of people will get opportunities. There are so much talent in India that people don’t get opportunities. Playing for India is always a dream and for them to achieve that dream will be really fantastic,” he said.

“The way talent has come up and the character the players have shown and the way we played, it indicates India’s bench strength. There are plenty of options right now in the Indian team. Four people are still fighting for places in the team. They are knocking on the doors, so it can be better than that.”

With Hardik Pandya hinting at a couple of debuts for India, it will be interesting to see if the likes of Umran Malik, Arshdeep Singh, and Rahul Tripathi get an opportunity to play.

Every Match Before 2022 T20I World Cup Will Be Important And Should Be Treated Like A World Cup Final: Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya said each game ahead of the upcoming 2022 T20I World Cup will be crucial for the team and should be treated with the same intensity as the World Cup final. After captaining Gujarat Titans to the Indian Premier League title in its maiden season last month, Hardik Pandya had said his next target is to win a World Cup with the national side.

With another edition of the T20I World Cup coming up in Australia, Hardik Pandya will have the same in mind when he leads the Men in Blue during a two-match T20I series against Ireland beginning Sunday.

Hardik Pandya: Every Match Before T20I World Cup Will Be Important

During a media interaction on Saturday, the all-rounder explained how each game will be crucial for the team and should be treated with the same intensity as the World Cup final.

“The first thing I told this group is that this is a challenge – mainly mentally because it is easy to say that we are playing against Ireland, but I don’t want that mindset in my team. When you are playing for India, it’s a matter of pride and if we want to win the T20 World Cup, from hereon, each and every match will be important and it is important that we play them like a World Cup final.”

“These matches will help us get better. If you work hard every day, eventually you will get better in the long run and that will help the Indian team. That’s something I told the boys that it does not matter who our opponents are, we have to focus on every game and consider that this is our biggest match to get better.”

With the red ball team busy preparing for the rescheduled 5th Test against England, Hardik Pandya will lead the limited-overs side, with VVS Laxman taking over as the head coach in the absence of Rahul Dravid.

“The conversations between me and the coach have been simple. He is on the same path where we want to make sure the attitude and approach are the same as we play in any other game or maybe a World Cup game. He is here to make sure that the culture and the pathway towards the World Cup, which is set by Rahul Sir and Rohit Sharma, will be the same and we’re going to be following that.”

In the five-match T20I series against South Africa at home, India fielded an unchanged final eleven, and Hardik Pandya indicated that while the team management wants to give opportunities to youngsters, at the same time, it wants to field its strongest eleven.

“There will be situations where there will be a couple of (debut) caps given, but more than anything, it is about making sure that when we go into the park, we have the best eleven playing. That will be the focus,” Hardik Pandya added.

Hardik Pandya: There Is Always A Backup In Case Any Player Is Injured

The stand-in captain also lauded India’s bench strength.

He said, “The way the team has shown its character and the way it played explains the bench strength of Indian cricket. So, even if unfortunately something happens to a player, there is always a backup.”

“There are so many options in the Indian team, where people are still vying for spots, and players are breaking doors to make it to the team. Nothing can be more satisfying than this and the way they are performing is a big thing for Indian cricket.”

Most Indian cricketers haven’t played in overseas conditions in a while, but Hardik Pandya admitted that in terms of approach, nothing will change in Ireland.

“If we talk about approach and culture in the team, it’s the same. It’s just that we are playing in different conditions and it’s a bit cold here,” he said.

With Hardik Pandya hinting at a couple of debuts for India, it will be interesting to see if the likes of Umran Malik, Arshdeep Singh, and Rahul Tripathi get an opportunity to play.

Notably, the likes of Umran Malik and Arshdeep Singh were warming the benches as India persisted with an unchanged XI in the 5-match series against South Africa. Yash Dayal, the left-arm pacer played an important role for the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the recently concluded season of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2022). The Hardik Pandya-led side scripted history by winning the competition in the team’s debut season itself.

Yash Dayal Would Say Hardik Pandya The Best Captain He Has Played Under

The 24-year-old pacer also suggested that Hardik Pandya, who was announced as Indian skipper for the forthcoming Ireland T20Is recently is the best captain that he has played under so far in his career.

Hardik Pandya scored 487 runs in IPL 2022 at an average of 44.27 and a strike rate of 131.27. He also picked eight wickets at an economy rate of 7.28. Taking extra responsibility on the batting front at No. 3-4, Hardik Pandya topped the runs chart for Gujarat Titans.

He also filled in the fifth/sixth bowler’s capacity, taking 8 wickets with a healthy economy rate to dispel doubts around his bowling fitness. The right-arm seamer reserved his best for the last by delivering an impactful spell of 3 for 17 off his 4 overs in the final.

Speaking about Hardik Pandya’s captaincy, Yash Dayal said: “Hardik Pandya is very calm and confident, and he knows what to do at what point of the game. He is a bowler’s captain. If you have confidence in yourself, he lets you take your own decisions. That further boosts the confidence of a bowler. I would say he is the best captain I have played under.”

Hardik Pandya’s captaincy in IPL 2022 earned praise from fans and experts alike. He contributed significantly with both bat and ball throughout the season and led his side to the prestigious title in stunning fashion. It is worth mentioning that Hardik Pandya has been appointed as the captain of Team India for the upcoming two-match T20I series against Ireland.

Yash Dayal Revealed Ashish Nehra Backed Him A Lot From Beginning

Yash Dayal further explained how he had the support of Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra in IPL 2022. He mentioned that the former cricketer taught him the importance of sticking to the basics rather than trying too many different things.

Yash Dayal added that Ashish Nehra helped him perfect the seam and wrist position for in-swing and out-swing. The youngster also highlighted that the ex-pacer also guided him in preparing plans for different situations.

Yash Dayal explained: “Ashish Nehra backed me a lot from the beginning. Earlier I used to try a lot of different things and experiment. But Ashish sir taught me that one must be centered and focused, and taught me some basic plans to follow without taking too much pressure and not being harsh on yourself. It’s a very competitive level of cricket so you must be smart too.”

“He taught me seam position for outswing, how to position the hand if you’re bowling inswing. He made me work on control a lot. He said how you deliver and execute is crucial, like how you bowl to the openers initially, what’s your plan for them, different plans for death over.”

The left-arm pacer was picked up by the Gujarat-based franchise for ₹3.20 crore at the IPL 2022 auction. He featured in nine games for the franchise in the latest edition and bagged 11 wickets. Yash Dayal, the Gujarat Titans’ pacer had picked 11 scalps in 9 IPL 2022 games averaging 26.91 including a career-best of 3/40 against Rajasthan in his debut game.

A host of Gujarat Titans players have lauded Ashish Nehra’s role in their title-winning run in IPL 2022. They have pointed out that the former Indian pacer always asked them to take it easy and not to take too much stress. Many cricket experts were skeptical when the Gujarat Titans named Hardik Pandya as their skipper ahead of IPL 2022. However, the all-rounder proved them wrong by taking the IPL newcomers to the title.

Hardik Pandya Excited To Play For India Again

Hardik Pandya is excited to play in Indian colours again as he wants to display how hard he has worked during the short hiatus. Hardik Pandya scored an unbeaten 31 off 12 balls in the 1st T20I vs SA. The star all-rounder had taken an indefinite break from the game after the conclusion of the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 in November last year in order to rediscover his mojo with the ball.

“I am obviously very excited. Playing for the country has always been special. Coming after such a long break and coming back fresh gives me the opportunity to kind of show what exactly I’ve worked hard for. Doing well for the country is more important and it gives me immense pleasure.”

After spending the last two months as a middle-order batter where he enjoyed great success, many had doubts whether Hardik Pandya will be able to return with his best in the finisher’s role for India. The flamboyant all-rounder cleared everyone’s doubts with a blistering 12-ball 31* versus the Proteas. He showed glimpses of his stunning abilities with some quality shots against quality pacers like Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje.

Hardik Pandya Feels Ongoing India- South Africa T20I Series A Great Opportunity To Express Himself

Hardik Pandya feels that the South Africa series will be the perfect tune-up for him before the forthcoming 2022 T20I World Cup as he is looking forward to playing the finisher’s role again for the team.

“Every series or every game you play is as important as your last. For me, World Cup is the goal but this is the right platform to prepare for it. Cricket is going to come back to back so you always need to be in the rhythm. This series is a great opportunity for me to express myself. My roles will be changed, I won’t be the captain or batting higher up the order. This will be back to what Hardik has been known for,” he further added.

Sunil Gavaskar Believes Hardik Pandya Is Going To Be The Game Changer For India In T20Is

Sunil Gavaskar believes Hardik Pandya will be a game-changer for Team India in T20Is going forward. The former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar even wants the all-rounder to bowl with the new ball on a few occasions.

Hardik Pandya was left out of the Indian team due to fitness-related issues after the T20I World Cup 2021. The Gujarat Titans (GT) skipper was recalled to the Indian side for the ongoing 5 matches T20I series against South Africa based on his all-around displays in IPL 2022, including leading the new franchise Gujarat Titans to the title.

Sunil Gavaskar Believes Hardik Pandya Is Going To Be The Game Changer For India

During a discussion, Sunil Gavaskar pointed out that Hardik Pandya is immensely valuable to Team India.

The cricketer-turned-commentator Sunil Gavaskar said: “I think he is going to be the game-changer for India, more often than not, in all the matches that are due to come, not just the World Cup but every single match that India plays, whether he bats at No. 5, whether he comes into bowl at first change or second change.”

“Sometimes I will actually want to see him with the new ball,” said Sunil Gavaskar.

Hardik Pandya bowled with the new ball on a few occasions for the Gujarat Titans (GT) in IPL 2022. However, he is unlikely to open the bowling for Team India, considering the plethora of options with the new ball at their disposal, unless they look to get one over from the sixth bowler out of the way.

Hardik Pandya stayed unbeaten on 31 runs in 12 balls in the 1st T20I. Hardik Pandya’s late charge and Ishan Kishan’s 76 off 48 balls helped India score 211/4, which is their highest ever score in a T20I against South Africa.

But the Proteas systematically went about chasing the target down. Dwaine Pretorius gave them the early impetus after which an unbeaten 131-run stand-off 64 balls between David Miller and Rassie Van der Dussen helped South Africa chase down the target with five balls to spare.

Graeme Smith Feels All-Round Package Of Hardik Pandya Gives India Options In Selection

Graeme Smith was asked if Team India needs Hardik Pandya the finisher more than Hardik Pandya the bowler.

The former South African skipper replied: “No, I disagree. You need the finisher as well but I think the all-round package of Hardik Pandya gives India options in selection.”

Graeme Smith then highlighted the balance Hardik Pandya brings to the Indian side, explaining: “It might give you the option of playing the extra spinner or a bowler less and strengthen your batting and going into the World Cup, I think having him as a full-blown all-rounder is key to the balance of India’s team.”

Team India’s balance was certainly compromised when Hardik Pandya was out due to injury. They tried the likes of Venkatesh Iyer as batting all-rounders but they fell short of the Baroda all-rounder’s lofty standards.

Chasing a mammoth total of 212, the Proteas were reeling at 81 for 3 when Rassie van der Dussen and David Miller joined hands. Rassie van der Dussen top-scored for his team, scoring 75 off 46 balls while David Miller slammed 64 off just 31 balls. The Temba Bavuma-led side took a 1-0 lead with a win in the first T20I. The teams will meet at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack for the next match on June 12 (Sunday).

Brief Scores: India 211/4 in 20 overs (Ishan Kishan 76, Shreyas Iyer 36; Wayne Parnell 1/32, Dwaine Pretorius 1/35) lost to South Africa 212/3 in 19.1 overs (Rassie van der Dussen 75 not out, David Miller 64 not out; Axar Patel 1/40, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 1/43) by seven wickets

Hardik Pandya’s Six Over Long-Off Off Anrich Nortje Was An Incredible Shot: Sunil Gavaskar

Hardik Pandya did not seem to have any difficulty settling back into the finisher’s role during India’s first T20I against South Africa.  Hardik Pandya returned to the role of a finisher with aplomb in the first T20I between India and South Africa in New Delhi.

While South Africa incredibly went on to chase down the target of 212 that India had set with seven wickets to spare, India left with a lot of positives around the batting and the versatility of the players available to play in the top six.

Hardik Pandya’s Six Over Long-Off Off Proteas Pacer Anrich Nortje Was An Incredible Shot: Sunil Gavaskar

Hardik Pandya had played in the top four for Gujarat Titans in their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign this season. He looked like he was made for the part, finishing fourth on the Orange Cap table and there were some doubts on whether he would be able to go back to being a finisher while playing for the Indian team.

However, he did that with ease, staying unbeaten on 31 runs in 12 balls in the 1st T20I. Batting great Sunil Gavaskar was all praise for Hardik Pandya, particularly a six he hit off Anrich Nortje in the last over of the Indian innings.

“Amazing. That shot he played over long-off off Nortje, was an incredible shot. Nortje is a quick bowler and the way he picked it, through the line over long-on was amazing. That is the reason why it is so exciting. You see Ishan Kishan at the top of the order, Rishabh Pant at four, and Shreyas Iyer batter really well. At five Hardik Pandya and at six, Dinesh Karthik,” said Gavaskar on Star Sports.

Hardik Pandya’s late charge and Ishan Kishan’s 76 off 48 balls helped India score 211/4, which is their highest ever score in a T20I against South Africa. Hardik Pandya scored 487 runs in IPL 2022 at an average of 44.27 and a strike rate of 131.27. He also picked eight wickets at an economy rate of 7.28.

David Miller And Rassie van der Dussen Helped South Africa Chase The 212 Run Target

But the Proteas systematically went about chasing the target down. Dwaine Pretorius gave them the early impetus after which an unbeaten 131-run stand-off 64 balls between David Miller and Rassie Van der Dussen helped South Africa chase down the target with five balls to spare.

Top-knocks by Rassie van der Dussen and David Miller took South Africa to a seven-wicket over India, in the first T20I at Arun Jaitely Stadium, Delhi. The pair were on fire in the first match of the T20I series at the Arun Jaitely Stadium, adding 131 runs for the fourth wicket to help the Proteas take a 1-0 lead.

Hardik Pandya Should Have Taken A Single In That Final Over, Says Ashish Nehra

Hardik Pandya, who shone as a finisher on his return to the Indian team, denied a single to Dinesh Karthik on the penultimate delivery of the Indian innings in the first T20I on Thursday in New Delhi.

Former India fast bowler and Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra joked about Hardik Pandya’s decision to not give the strike back to Dinesh Karthik in the final over of India’s innings in the first T20I against South Africa on Thursday. Hardik Pandya denied a single in the penultimate delivery of the final over and asked Dinesh Karthik to return to the non-striker’s end.

Hardik Pandya returned to his finisher avatar as he smashed a brilliant 31 off 12 deliveries to power India to a mammoth total of 211.  Even after being at his best with the bat, fans and Gujarat Titans coach, Ashish Nehra, aren’t happy with Hardik Pandya. The reason is his refusal to take a single on the penultimate ball of India’s innings to give strike to Dinesh Karthik.

The move drew a lot of flak online and Twitter wasn’t really impressed with Hardik Pandya’s antics. Ashish Nehra said that he should have taken the single since it was Dinesh Karthik on strike and not the pacer himself.

Hardik Pandya Should Have Taken A Single In The Penultimate Delivery Of The Last 20th Over Feels Ashish Nehra

Hardik Pandya, who was India’s vice-captain in the first T20I of a 5-match series, hit 31 from just 12 deliveries in a stunning late overs assault, but all that he managed in the final delivery of the innings was a double (2 runs) after denying strike to Dinesh Karthik in the previous delivery.

Dinesh Karthik, who had made his comeback in Indian colours after a gap of 3 years (last played in the 2019 World Cup), got to face only 2 deliveries as he walked into bat only in the final over of the innings after Rishabh Pant, the stand-in captain, got out in the first delivery of that over.

“He should have taken a single in that final over. Dinesh Karthik was at the other end, it wasn’t me.” Ashish Nehra joked during his interaction.

Furthermore, the Gujarat Titans head coach heaped praise on Hardik Pandya for easing back into the role of the finisher for India in T20 cricket. Notably, it was the all-rounder’s first match for India after the 2021 T20I World Cup as the all-rounder had taken a break to recover from long-standing back injury issues.

Hardik Pandya hit 3 sixes and 2 boundaries as he effortlessly fit into the role of the finisher after having batted at No. 4 for Gujarat Titans throughout their winning campaign in IPL 2022. The newly appointed Indian vice-captain for the South Africa T20Is had led Gujarat Titans (GT) to glory in the recently concluded IPL 2022, shining at the No. 4 spot in his debut season as captain.

Hardik Pandya Can Play Any Role: Ashish Nehra

Ashish Nehra said Hardik Pandya can excel at any position, regardless of the format of the game because of his ability and the work he has put in to improve his batting skills.

“Hardik is such an actor that can play any role. Be it, a hero, or a villain. If you want him to play the heroine, he can do that also, because he has the ability and the game to bat in any situation,” Nehra joked.

“Not just in T20I cricket but also in 50-over format and Test cricket. He has incredible ability in his batting. He can score runs in No. 4 and No. 3 as well. Hardik has played this finisher’s role for a long time. He can bat anywhere because of his ability and the work he has done,” he added.

India’s effort with the bat went in vain as South Africa chased down a 212-run target with 5 deliveries to spare, thereby ending the Asian giants’ 12-match-winning run in T20I cricket. David Miller and Rassie van der Dussen showed great composure as the duo helped South Africa beat India by seven wickets at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Thursday.

Rassie van der Dussen, who was dropped on 29 by Shreyas Iyer, scored an unbeaten 75 off 46 balls. His partner David Miller scored 64* off 31 balls. With this win, the tourists have taken a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
