Rahul Tewatia Left Heartbroken After Being Ignored For Ireland Tour, Posts Emotional Tweet

Rahul Tewatia has been left heartbroken after the latest snub by the national selectors. The highly-rated allrounder could not find a spot in Team India’s new-look T20I side for the upcoming series against Ireland.

The selectors were expected to name a new-look side for the series as India’s Test team regulars are set to directly fly to England to prepare for the rescheduled fifth Test at Edgbaston next month. Tewatia must have been fancying his chances to make it to the team after once again  displaying his skills in IPL 2022.

But while the selectors did name a new-look side for the series, Tewatia could not find a spot in the team. Allrounder Hardik Pandya was named as the captain for the series while Rahul Tripathi earned his maiden call-up. Sanju Samson also earned a recall for the series. Suryakumar Yadav is also returning to action with the upcoming series.

Rahul Tewatia’s cryptic tweet:

The latest snub seems to have hurt Rahul Tewatia a lot and he did not shy away from expressing his feelings. Hours after the squad was announced, the allrounder took to Twitter to post an emotional tweet. With his tweet, he made it pretty clear that he was expecting to find a spot in the team and was hurt after the snub as he wrote:

“Expectations hurt.”

Tewatia is yet to play for Team India. Last year, he had earned his maiden India call-up for the five-match home series against England. However, he failed to make the cut for the series after failing to clear the fitness test mandated by the Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI).

The left-handed batsman has been performing consistently in the IPL and has been one of the most sought after finishers in the competition. This year, he played a crucial role in Gujarat Titans’ victory, scoring 217 runs at an average of 31 and a strike-rate of more than 147.

India’s squad for Ireland series:

Talking about India’s squad for the upcoming series, several regular players are missing due to the Test against England. In the absence of the regular players, Pandya will lead the squad while Bhuvneshwar Kumar will be his deputy.

Head coach Rahul Dravid will also miss the tour in order to prepare the team for the England Test. In his absence, former India batsman VVS Laxman will be the head coach on the tour and will be assisted by Shitanshu Kotak (batting coach), Sairaj Bahutule (bowling coach) and Munish Bali (fielding coach).

Squad:

Hardik Pandya (Captain), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (vice-captain), Ishan Kishan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sanju Samson, Suryakumar Yadav, Venkatesh Iyer, Deepak Hooda, Rahul Tripathi, Dinesh Karthik (wicket-keeper), Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Harshal Patel, Avesh Khan, Arshdeep Singh, Umran Malik

Ireland squad:

Ireland have also named their squad for the two-match series. The hosts have included uncapped players Stephen Doheny and Conor Olphert in their 14-member squad for the upcoming assignment. The duo have earned their maiden call-ups on the back of their impressive performances in the domestic circuit.

India and Ireland were last involved in a T20I bilateral affair back in 2018. On that occasion, the Men in Blue had swept the two-match series comfortably.

Squad:

Andrew Balbirnie (c), Mark Adair, Curtis Campher, Gareth Delany, George Dockrell, Stephen Doheny, Josh Little, Andrew McBrine, Barry McCarthy, Conor Olphert, Paul Stirling, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker, Craig Young.

Jos Buttler Is As Calm Off The Field As He Is Aggressive With The Bat: Rahul Tewatia

Rahul Tewatia played for Rajasthan Royals between 2020-2021 before the franchise released him ahead of the 2022 mega auction. The Rajasthan Royals, however, retained Jos Buttler, who has been with the Rajasthan-based side since 2018. Gujarat Titans shared a video wherein three former Royals – Rahul Tewatia, David Miller, and Varun Aaron – reminisced about the time they spent with the Rajasthan Royals.

“He (Buttler) is as calm off the field as he is aggressive with the bat,” said Tewatia. “I hope he retains the orange cap but doesn’t score against us.”

David Miller, too, echoed Rahul Tewatia’s words, adding, “(He has been) very solid. The way he has been batting is incredible this season.”

Also, he has taken 32 wickets in the league. Rahul Tewatia, who shot to IPL fame with a magical 31-ball 53 in a historic chase against Punjab in IPL 2020, has been sold for more than 20 times his base price of Rs 40 lakh at the mega IPL 2022 auction in Bengaluru.

He has amassed 217 runs in 14 IPL 2022 games averaging 31 coming in to bat late and those runs have come at an impressive strike rate of 147.62. An all-rounder, hard-hitting finisher, Rahul Tewatia was picked up by the Gujarat Titans for INR 9 crore at the IPL 2022 Mega Auction. David Miller has scored 381 runs in 14 IPL 2022 games averaging 54.43.

Rahul Tewatia Reckons Playing For Rajasthan Royals Was A Breakthrough For Him

Varun Aaron noted that he “got to share the dressing room with some of the greats”. Meanwhile, both Rahul Tewatia and David Miller also heaped praise on their former team skipper Sanju Samson. Sanju Samson had scored 374 runs in 14 games averaging 28.77 including 2 fifties in IPL 2022.

“Being in the (bio) bubble, you get to do a lot more with the team. Sanju as captain has got really nice balance. (He is a) great guy and a seriously good cricketer,” said Miller.

Rahul Tewatia Of Gujarat Titans Is Unconcerned With Price Tag Of INR 9 Crores

Rahul Tewatia, the all-rounder was bought for ₹9 crore in the Indian Premier League mega auction, conducted in February earlier this year. Among other high-profile signings for Gujarat Titans was all-rounder Rahul Tewatia, who was bought for INR 9 crore in the auction. However, Rahul Tewatia is not concerned with the price tag.

The 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League begins on March 26, with MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings taking on the Kolkata Knight Riders in the opening game of the tournament at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Rahul Tewatia Wants To Fulfill Role Assigned By New Gujarat Titans Franchise

The upcoming edition of the IPL 2022 tournament sees an addition of two new franchises to the IPL roster; Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans. Both sides built their respective squads in the mega auction of the tournament, roping in star international and Indian players to their roster.

“My point of view is that, what is the point of taking pressure about these things? The team is showing belief in you and that is why they are ready to spend that kind of money on you. I don’t feel the pressure and it is just a case of trying to repay their faith. I just want to fulfill the role for which I was taken in the team and just work hard,” Tewatia said in a media interaction.

Gujarat Titans retained 3 players for a whopping 38 Crores; the most any franchise spent on retention on their top 3 players. Hardik Pandya and Rashid Khan were retained for INR 15 Crores each and Shubman Gill was retained for INR 8 Crores.

Apart from pacer Lockie Ferguson and spin all-rounder Rahul Tewatia, they also got pacer Mohammed Shami at a price of ₹6.25 Cr. They also got some good steals in form of Jason Roy (who opted out) (₹2 Cr) and Matthew Wade (₹2.4 Cr). They banked on quite a few all-rounders as the likes of Rahul Tewatia, Vijay Shankar, and Jayant Yadav.

Rahul Tewatia Feels The Role Of An All Rounder Is Important

Rahul Tewatia further said that he would need to shoulder a lot of responsibility when he comes out to bat during the upcoming Indian Premier League. Gujarat Titans start their IPL campaign against Lucknow Super Giants on March 28 at the Wankhede stadium.

“.. the role of an all-rounder is important and it is there in every team, the one who bat at 6-7-8 their role is very important, that they have less time and more opportunity to make an impact. It is an important role and we can put the team in a good position,” Tewatia said.

“If we bat first, we try to finish well and if we are chasing, we will try and see how we can get over the finish line, and we will prepare accordingly,” he elaborated.

Rahul Tewatia, whose favourite cricketer is former India swashbuckling all-rounder Yuvraj Singh; also said he was very keen to fulfill the “unfinished business” which was to win the coveted IPL Trophy.

Rahul Tewatia made his IPL debut in 2014, and since then has featured in a total of 48 matches, registered 521 runs. He has also scored a solitary half-century during his entire IPL career.

Gujarat Titans (GT) have signed Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbaz as a replacement for the England batter Jason Roy for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022.

Kumar Sangakkara: Both Sanju Samson And Rahul Tewatia Are Outstanding Performers

Rajasthan Royals will open their IPL 2021 campaign against Punjab Kings in their fourth match of the IPL 2021 on Monday at the Wankhede Stadium. Earlier this year, the Rajasthan Royals let go of Steve Smith and appointed Sanju Samson as the skipper of their side with Kumar Sangakkara been roped in as Director of Cricket.

“The pressure is always there, you can try and forget about it. But the reality is I think Sanju and all the players will always tell you that the expectation and pressure are always there.

“There are various coping mechanisms and little techniques you used to deal with them to let you focus at the moment. It is really important to have that grand ambition of playing regular international cricket,” Kumar Sangakkara said during a virtual press conference on Sunday.

“Both Sanju and Rahul are capable of not just being regulars, but great and outstanding performers on the international stage. They have an amazing ability, great cricketing sense, and both of them over the years have really progressed.

“Sanju has been a young batting superstar in the Indian scene for a long time, but the real key is to understand that there is a process to achieve that ambition and to take it to match by match. Each innings you play in the IPL, the focus should be on that. It is important that both Samson and Rahul have the trust of the team,” Kumar Sangakkara added.

Rajasthan Royals finished last season at the bottom of the table with 12 points from their 14 matches. But at IPL 2021 auction, Rajasthan Royals went big, spending Rs 24.20 crore on buying players. South Africa all-rounder Chris Morris was snapped up by the franchise at Rs 16.25 crore, becoming the most expensive player in the history of IPL.

Rahul Tewatia was undoubtedly impressive lower down the order and punched well above his weight, as he finished IPL 2020 as the only Indian player with 10+ wickets and 250+ runs. Sanju Samson amassed 375 runs averaging 28.84 with 3 fifties.

Kumar Sangakkara: ECB Had Confirmed Jofra Archer Will Miss Initial Part Of IPL 2021 Due To Injury

Kumar Sangakkara has played 134 Tests and 404 ODIs during an illustrious career. Jofra Archer was the Most Valuable Player Of The Tournament but will miss the initial 4-5 games for RR. Jofra Archer was ruled out of England’s one-day series against India and will also miss at least the start of the Indian Premier League due to his ongoing elbow injury.

“We have a lot of match-winners, not just English specific. With Sanju Samson, Rahul Tewatia, and our fast bowlers, and the key is to have different players who can do something special on the day. Everyone is looking forward to starting the tournament.

“Earlier this year, England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) management confirmed that pacer Jofra Archer would be missing the initial part of IPL 2021 due to an injury. The pacer recently underwent surgery and is currently going through his rehab,” Kumar Sangakkara further added.

Steve Smith was released by the Rajasthan Royals franchise ahead of the IPL 2021 auction. Steve Smith who took charge from Ajinkya Rahane in the middle of the season in 2019 failed to live up to his expectations scoring 311 runs averaging only 25.91 with 3 fifties in IPL 2020. Sanju Samson was named as the new captain of Rajasthan Royals.

IPL 2020: Rajasthan Royals Had To Give 100% For Do Or Die Game Against KXIP – Rahul Tewatia

Rahul Tewatia, the all-rounder of Rajasthan Royals, reckoned that it was a do or die game for his side as they thrashed Kings XI Punjab on Friday to keep their playoffs hopes alive.

Chasing a stiff target of 186, England all-rounder Ben Stokes provided the flying start for the Rajasthan Royals. Ben Stokes smashed 50 off 26 balls studded with three sixes and six fours after taking a stunning catch besides picking 2 wickets. Sanju Samson too scored 48 with 4 boundaries and 3 sixes.

Rahul Tewatia: Rajasthan Royals Showed Intent On The Field

It was an all-round performance by the Rajasthan Royals batsman Ben Stokes as they sealed a comfortable win by 7 wickets against Kings XI Punjab to end their five-match winning streak.

“Overall the performance was, we showed intent in the field. It was a do or die game so we had to give 100 per cent. And the way Jofra started, we gained momentum at that point,” said Tahul Tewatia in the post-match press conference.

Ben Stokes himself took a brilliant catch to dismiss KXIP opening batsman Mandeep Singh in the very first over. Rahul Tewatia also took a stunning catch which ended Nicholas Pooran’s cameo in the 18th over as he fell after scoring a brisk 22 off 10 balls including 3 sixes.

“Our batters are taking responsibility. Initially, we were losing wickets in the powerplay but it isn’t the case anymore. We concentrated on fielding during our practice and Ben Stokes fielded very well and took a brilliant catch. He is one of the best fielders of our team,” said Tewatia.

“Talking about my catch, I was right at the boundary rope and I made my jump at the right time to take the catch.

Rajasthan Royals won both their games against Kings XI Punjab after KXIP failed to defend 223 in their first match against Rajasthan in IPL 2020. Rahul Tewatia was the hero in that match scoring 53 with 7 sixes while Sanju Samson too scored 85.

Rahul Tewatia: Middle Order Becomes Strong Because Of Ben Stokes Providing Start

Rahul Tewatia feels the Rajasthan Royals’ middle order has become strong as they are now getting a good start up the order especially with Ben Stokes opening the innings. Ben Stokes has played 7 matches scoring 267 runs averaging 44.5 with 1 century and 1 fifty so far in IPL 2020 after arriving late in UAE.

“Our middle order has become strong because of the top order performance and the way Stokes has been providing us with starts it is a really a positive sign,” said Tewatia.

The Rajasthan Royals are now at fifth in the points table and will next lock horns with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Sunday. Rajasthan Royals are placed 5th behind Kings XI Punjab based on Net Run Rate although both teams have 12 points each.

Chris Gayle scored 99 off 63 balls, but it wasn’t enough for KXIP who were restricted to 185/4 after brilliant bowling once again from Jofra Archer, and MoM Ben Stokes both managed to pick two wickets apiece.

IPL 2020: Aakash Chopra Praises ‘Super Talented’ Rahul Tewatia

Aakash Chopra praised the Rajasthan Royals’ all-rounder Rahul Tewatia for playing superbly against SunRisers Hyderabad’s Rashid Khan which proved him to be a special talent. Rajasthan Royals came from behind and won the match against SunRisers Hyderabad despite losing wickets at the beginning of their chase.

Rahul Tewatia won accolades from experts after he stitched a partnership of unbeaten 85 with Riyan Parag to propel RR to an unlikely win against SRH. At the same time, Riyan Parag scored 42 off 26 balls while Man of the Match Rahul Tewatia scored 45 from 28 balls.

Aakash Chopra – RR Won A Lost Match

Rajasthan Royals lost the wickets of Ben Stokes who opened along with Jos Buttler and skipper Steven Smith and were reeling at only 78/5 needing 81 more to win off eight overs only. SunRisers Hyderabad posted 158/4 after skipper David Warner scored 48 and Manish Pandey scored 54. But the target appeared daunting until Riyan Parag and Rahul Tewatia came to the crease together to give RR an unlikely victory.

“When RR came to bat, SRH got three quick wickets – firstly Stokes who was made to open, Smith got run out and then Buttler as well. With their three overseas pillars gone, it was down to Robin Uthappa and the kids.”

Ben Stokes

“And the kids gave a lot of enjoyment. Rahul Tewatia and Riyan Parag were absolutely top-class. And these youngsters won Rajasthan Royals a match I never felt they could win.”

“So RR registered their third win, which is so important because they had lost their last 4 matches. And they won without Samson and Smith scoring runs and despite Buttler and Stokes failing. So once they fire, what is going to happen,” Aakash Chopra said.

Aakash Chopra commented that Rajasthan Royals won a lost match as three of their top-order batsmen were dismissed early before Rahul Tewatia, and Riyan Parag gave them an unlikely victory. Aakash Chopra credited Rahul Tewatia for performing well despite RR’s top order failing to perform in the match against SRH. Aakash Chopra enjoyed batting of 18-year-old Riyan Parag too who now has 225 runs in 12 matches averaging 25.

Rahul Tewatia Is Special For Executing Shots Under Pressure – Aakash Chopra

Rashid Khan picked two wickets conceding 25 runs in four overs but his 18th over proved expensive as Rahul Tewatia hit him for four boundaries. The last four overs saw 58 runs as both Rahul Tewatia, and Riyan Parag went on a big-hitting spree.

“Everything else is fine, but that 18th over of Rashid Khan, first ball four with a reverse sweep, second ball four with another reverse sweep and an even better shot. The third ball when he hit the boundary over the covers, it was the best of them all.”

Rashid Khan (SRH)
Rashid Khan (Image Credit: BCCI/IPL)

“If you can execute such a nice shot under so much pressure, then Rahul Tewatia, you are a special player. I really like watching you and you won RR a match they were about to lose,” he added.

Rahul Tewatia came into reckoning after he scored 53 runs off 31 balls including seven sixes against a hapless KXIP attack as KXIP lost despite posting 223/2.  Rahul Tewatia has scored exactly 300 runs in 27 matches and 19 innings, but the bulk of the runs came in IPL 2020 where he amassed 189 runs averaging 37.8 at a strike rate of 152.42.

Rajasthan Royals are at 6th place with three wins and four losses having six points in seven matches while SRH are one place ahead in terms of better Net Run Rate. Rajasthan Royals face Delhi Capitals next while SRH will face CSK next.

“I was looking for one big hit, one big over and that came (when Cottrell came in to bowl the 18th over). I had the confidence that once I start hitting, I would be able to pull it off. I was looking for a game-changing over to close in on the target,” he added.

IPL 2020: Always Knew Rahul Tewatia Would Get IPL Stardom With Batting – Coach Vijay Yadav

Rahul Tewatia who is a leg-spin bowling all-rounder was traded to Rajasthan Royals from Delhi Capitals ahead of IPL 2020. Incidentally, he had made his IPL debut with RR in 2014. Rahul Tewatia made headlines for his valiant knock of 31 balls 53 for which Rajasthan Royals chased down KXIP’s target of 224 which is the highest successful run chase ever in IPL.

IPL throws up unlikely heroes and Sunday was no exception and a “Day of Rahuls” when the lesser-known Rahul Tewatia from Haryana’s Sihi village in Faridabad district stole the limelight from India star KL Rahul, striking five sixes in an over from Sheldon Cottrell that changed the course of RR’s match against Kings XI Punjab.

Rahul Tewatia Was Expected To Have His Day In IPL With The Bat: Vijay Yadav

Vijay Yadav who is a wicketkeeper and an aggressive lower-order batsman having played 19 One Day Internationals from 1992 to 1994 and appeared once for India in Test cricket was ecstatic after Rahul Tewatia’s performance.

“I always told Rahul Tewatia that he will have his day in the IPL and it would be because of his batting,” the excitement and satisfaction was palpable in childhood coach Vijay Yadav’s voice while talking about his ward’s match-defining 31-ball 53 for Rajasthan Royals in an IPL encounter.

Rajasthan Royals Brand Ambassador Shane Warne also was full of praise for the 27-year-old all-rounder. Rahul Tewatia started slowly by scoring only eight runs from first 19 balls but then exploded scoring 30 runs in one over from Sheldon Cottrell.

“Firstly what courage and heart shown by Tewatia, especially after his poor start with bat, well done young man awesome,” Warne summed it up in a tweet that Tewatia would remember for a long time.

Haryana have a tradition of producing leg-spinners and Rahul Tewatia followed in the footsteps of his much illustrious colleagues DC’s Amit Mishra and RCB’s Yuzvendra Chahal despite being in their shadows for the better part of the last seven years in senior cricket.

But Vijay Yadav, a former hard-hitting Indian wicketkeeper-batsman who is best known for advising legendary Sachin Tendulkar to bowl the last over in the Hero Cup semi-final against South Africa, remembers a shy kid who came at his “Cricket Gurukul” in 1998-99 as an eight-year-old.

“His father is a lawyer in a Faridabad court and they are a middle-class family. But what struck me was his family’s enthusiasm even though he was a shy kid,” Yadav fondly remembers.

“Not just his father but his uncles would also come to drop him and they were like any aspiring parent if their kid didn’t get a chance to bat or bowl,” Yadav remembers.

“It was like the whole family wanted to make him a cricketer.”

In fact, Rahul Tewatia’s career ran parallel with Yuzvendra Chahal as they played U-15s and U-19s together.

“A player must be aware about his strengths and when Rahul was in his teens, he was always competing with Chahal, I made him aware about a few things,” Yadav said.

“I told him he will be a useful leg-spinner but Amit and Chahal are more skillful bowlers. His advantage was his batting which was in a different league. I told him that you can win an IPL game with this batting,” said Yadav, who has been an India A fielding coach.

“He is an asset as a batting all-rounder,” Yadav said.

Even during the lockdown, Rahul Tewatia, along with Uttar Pradesh and Kolkata Knight Riders player Rinku Singh, would come for nets at his academy.

“I am not surprised he hit five sixes in an over,” explained Yadav.

Sachin Tendulkar termed Rahul Tewatia’s knock as a terrific one while expressing his surprise as KXIP bowlers didn’t often bowl yorkers at the death overs.

Vijay Yadav, who once played a cameo against South Africa to win an ODI during the Proteas first tour to the country in 1992-93, is realistic about chances that Rahul Tewatia can achieve.

“All Haryana players in recent years have got India opportunities when they deserved whether it’s Jogi (Joginder Sharma), Mohit Sharma, Yuzi (Yuzvendra Chahal) or Jayant (Yadav).

“Rahul should back his strength which is white-ball cricket.”

Rahul Tewatia has scored 174 runs and taken 17 wickets from 22 IPL matches so far. His highest score is 53 which he achieved against KXIP while his best bowling figure is 3/18.
