Shreyas Iyer May Have Been Told By KKR Management To Change His Statement That KKR CEO Venky Mysore Is Involved In Team Selection: Aakash Chopra

Shreyas Iyer, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain had earlier revealed during the ongoing IPL 2022 that the team’s CEO Venky Mysore was also involved in the team selection. However, the KKR skipper later clarified, saying he meant that the CEO was there to console players who were sitting out.

Ex-India opener Aakash Chopra believes Shreyas Iyer may have been told to change his statement by the team management. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the cricketer-turned-commentator reckoned that the KKR management might have wanted Shreyas Iyer to issue a clarification over his comments about Venky Mysore.

Shreyas Iyer May Have Been Told To Change His Statement That KKR CEO Venky Mysore Is Involved In Team Selection: Aakash Chopra

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Shreyas Iyer has issued a clarification over his “CEO is also obviously involved in team selections” remarks.

Aakash Chopra said: “Shreyas Iyer once said in a press conference that the KKR CEO is also involved in team selection. I think he got a rap on his knuckles and maybe he was told to change his statement. He then clarified that he had meant that the CEO motivates players when they get dropped and consoles them, but he isn’t involved in the team selection.”

On Monday, May 9, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Shreyas Iyer made a big revelation after the dominant 52-run win in the 56th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 against Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy. Shreyas Iyer revealed that the CEO of Kolkata Knight Riders, Venky Mysore, at times, is also involved in the selection of the playing XI.

“Coach and at times, CEO is also obviously involved in team selections. Each and every player takes it well, and they have put in their best efforts,” he said.

After Shreyas Iyer’s comments, a controversy sparked and several cricket pundits slammed the KKR CEO for his involvement in team selection. However, KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer, speaking after the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Saturday, May 14, issued a clarification over his previous comments. Shreyas Iyer said that when he took Venky Mysore’s name in his last interview he wanted to say that the CEO is in the team to “console the players” who were not making it to the playing XI.

“Also I want to clarify from the last interview. When I took the CEO’s name, I wanted to say that he’s there to console the players who’ve been sitting out. It’s tough for us as well when we select the team, ” Shreyas Iyer asserted.

The two-run loss against Lucknow Super Giants knocked Kolkata Knight Riders out of the IPL but that did not stop losing captain Shreyas Iyer to describe it as “one of the best games” that he has ever been part of.

Shreyas Iyer Looked Upset While Talking To Brendon McCullum After Getting dismissed Against Rajasthan: Aakash Chopra

He pointed out that Shreyas Iyer ‘looked upset’ while in conversation with head coach Brendon McCullum after his dismissal against Rajasthan Royals (RR).

“But I am not sure about that because we saw in one game that he visibly looked upset while talking to Brendon McCullum after getting out against RR.”

Brendon McCullum

The franchise is expected to introduce some changes to its coaching staff for next year’s cash-rich league. Brendon McCullum will no longer serve as the team’s head coach. He stepped down from his position after the side’s elimination. He has been appointed as the new coach of England’s Test side.

The Kolkata-based side started its campaign on a promising note, winning three of its first four fixtures. However, they struggled with their consistency soon after and ended up in the bottom half of the standings. Last season’s finalists failed to make it to the IPL playoffs this year. The Shreyas Iyer-led side was able to secure just six wins from their fourteen games and finished seventh in the points table.

Shreyas Iyer as a captain was a big step-up from an off-form Eoin Morgan. Shreyas Iyer is tactically adept and a breathtaking player of spin, something that KKR needed this year. In his first season with the franchise where the team was being chopped and changed on a daily basis, Shreyas Iyer stood tall, scoring 401 runs from his 14 matches, making it a successful debut season.

With an unsettled squad, Rinku Singh was given a chance and he took it with open arms. 174 runs in just 7 matches at a strike rate of 149 is breathtaking for an uncapped player. However, retained by KKR despite fitness and injury issues, spinner Varun Chakravarthy failed to find his rhythm. He played 11 matches and picked just 6 wickets at an economy of 8.5.

KKR bought Shivam Mavi for a stellar price of Rs 7.25 crore and played him for just 6 games. Shivam Mavi leaked runs at the economy of over 10 and took just 5 wickets in the entire season.

Brendon McCullum Appointed As England Test Coach, Set To Step Down As KKR Coach

Kolkata Knight Riders head coach Brendon McCullum has been appointed as the new head coach of the England men’s Test team. England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have ended the former New Zealand skipper a four-year deal. Interestingly, McCullum’s stint as England’s Test coach will begin against New Zealand. England will host the Black Caps for a three-match Test series, starting on June 2 at the iconic Lord’s.

England will also have a new Test captain at helm when they take on New Zealand. Allrounder Ben Stokes will be leading the team in the upcoming series. Stokes recently replaced Joe Root as England’s Test captain after the team’s consistent struggles in the longest format of the game.

“We are delighted to confirm Brendon as England Men’s Test Head Coach. It has been a real privilege to get to know him and understand his views and vision for the game. I believe his appointment will be good for England’s Test team,” Managing Director of England’s Men’s Cricket Rob Key said.

Brendon McCullum to end association with Kolkata Knight Riders:

The latest turn of events mean Brendon McCullum will step down as the head coach of IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders. McCullum was roped in by the Kolkata-based outfit as their head coach in August 2019. Under his guidance, KKR failed to make it to the playoffs in 2020 but bounced back in 2021. The two-time winners made it to the final in IPL 2021 where they faced defeat against Chennai Super Kings. At present, McCullum is busy coaching the side in IPL 2022.

The season has not panned out in an expected manner for the legendary cricketer and his team. KKR are currently languishing at the 7th spot in the points table with 5 wins from 12 games. They are all but out of the playoffs race this season. Even if they manage to win their remaining two games, they need other results to go their way in order to make it to the next round.

IPL 2022: Rohit Sharma Slams His Teammates After Humiliating Defeat Against KKR

Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma has criticised the batters of his team following the loss to Kolkata Knight Riders on Monday (May 9). After losing their first eight games of the season, the five-time champions won two in a row and looked set to register their third win on the trot after their bowlers’ fine display. Riding on Jasprit Bumrah’s stunning 5-wicket haul, Mumbai managed to restrict KKR to 165 for 9. However, the Mumbai batsmen failed to compliment the effort of the bowlers.

Rohit Sharma fell for 2 in the first over itself and from thereon, there was no way back for Mumbai. They kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were eventually all out for a modest total of 113 in the 18th over. Opener Ishan Kishan scored a fighting fifty but did not get much support from the other end. Apart from Kishan, no other Mumbai batsmen managed to cross the 20-run barrier. As many as six players could not even touch the double-digit mark as Mumbai became the first team in the history of IPL to lose 9 games in a single season.

For KKR, Pat Cummins starred with the ball. The Australia pace spearhead gave away just 22 runs in his 4 overs while dismissing Ishan, Daniel Sams and Murugan Ashwin in the same over. Allrounder Andre Russell also picked up a couple of wickets as KKR kept their slim hopes of progressing ahead alive.

Rohit Sharma disappointed with batsmen:

Speaking at the end of the game, Rohit Sharma did not beat around the bush and straightaway criticised his teammates for their poor batting. The Mumbai skipper stated that the target was not unachievable on that pitch before stating that he was disappointed with his team’s batting efforts. Rohit rued the lack of partnership during the chase. At the same time, he also lauded the bowling effort of his team and praised the bowlers for restricting KKR to 165 after their great start.

“Disappointed the way we batted. Poor from the batters. Not really (difficulty of batting on this pitch). We are playing our fourth game here and we know what to expect here. We know seam bowlers will get some help from the pitch. We didn’t get partnerships and you need partnerships chasing a total like that.

“I don’t think so (if Mumbai could have restricted KKR to a lower total). Looking at the way they batted in the first 10 overs, they were 100 runs in 10 or 11 overs. But the way we came back was brilliant. Great effort from Bumrah and the entire bowling unit. Batters let us down. It’s been that kind of a season where both departments weren’t consistent enough. It is something that we wanted to improve today but couldn’t do it,” said Rohit Sharma.

Mumbai’s next game is against Chennai Super Kings on Thursday (May 12). The record winners of IPL would be desperate to get back to winning ways and finish the competition with a few wins under their belt. KKR, on the other hand, will be in action again on Saturday. They will lock horns against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
