Pakistan Cricket Board is highly likely to set to announce Pakistan international Yasir Arafat as the national team’s new bowling coach. The 40-year-old will pull double duty with the team and will also serve as the side’s head coach on tours where Mickey Arthur is not available.
Mickey Arthur, who is set to be unveiled as Pakistan’s “team director” will have the option of choosing when to accompany the men in green due to his commitments with Derbyshire and his reluctance to take on a full-time coaching role. On Mickey Arthur’s behest, Yasir Arafat will now serve as the “coach” when he is not available.
The former Pakistan international will now do the duty of Saqlain Mushtaq and former bowling coach Shaun Tait all in one. He will likely lead Pakistan on its tour of Sri Lanka in July and the Asia Cup in September before Mickey Arthur joins the team for the ODI World Cup 2023 in India and Pakistan’s tour of Australia later this year.
Yasir Arafat has proven his mettle in coaching circles and recently became the first Pakistan Test cricketer to complete a level 4 coaching course offered by England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
He represented Pakistan in 11 ODIs, 13 T20Is, and 3 Tests but is widely remembered for his globetrotting exploits with franchises around the world. Yasir Arafat has lived in England since his retirement taking on coaching roles at a junior level.
Pakistan will tour Sri Lanka in July for two Tests and take part in Asia Cup 2023 in September. Mickey Arthur is expected to be unavailable for these assignments, but will join the team for the 2023 World Cup in India and the Australian tour later this year.
Mickey Arthur is set to resume his role as head coach of Pakistan’s cricket team. Although, Mickey Arthur will be mostly instructing online until this year’s ICC ODI World Cup 2023, which will be held in India. Mickey Arthur has reportedly told the Pakistan Cricket Board that he will be ready to join the squad in India for the 50-over mega event this year.
Meanwhile, he will continue to coach Derbyshire County Cricket Club on a full-time basis. Mickey Arthur, who is originally from South Africa, was Pakistan’s head coach from 2016 until 2019.
Mickey Arthur’s contract is a very interesting one and will be the first of its kind. Pakistan Cricket Board’s management committee headed by Najam Sethi seems quite eager to avail his services following his previous record with the national team. Under his coaching, Pakistan won its first-ever Champions Trophy title in 2017. Pakistan also won record 11 consecutive T20I series.
