The Indian women’s doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponappa lost to Japanese Shinoya and Kihurhara  in the semi finals of US Open Grand Prix Gold event in New York. It was a disappointing performance by the Indian pair after such a great tournament till the semi finals.

In the first set the Japanese pair made a great start taking the first 2 points. Ashwini Ponappa and Gutta came back to equal at 2-2. The Japanese then took 3 successive points to stretch their lead to 5-2. Jwala Gutta and Ashwini made a good comeback in the game to level the things at 7-7. After that Ashwini/Gutta took a 8-7 lead. At the change over the Japanese pair lead 11-10. After the changeover the Japanese took a 13-10 lead. Both the pairs took alternate points till 19-17 in favor of Japanese pair. The Japanese pair took the first set 21-17.

In the second game the Japanese started off to an aggressive start taking the first 4 points in succession. Jwala Gutta/ Ponappa had no coordination between them and the Japanese pair took the advantage of it. Both the pairs took alternate points till 9-6 in favor of Japanese pair. At the changeover the Japanese had 11-6 lead. After the changeover the Indian pair did not have any answer to the Japanese pair and lost the match 21-11.

The Japanese pair was brilliant with their attacks and the Indian pair did their best to unsettle the Japanese pair. The Indian pair made a lot of mistakes and paid dearly for their mistakes.
