Mixed Fortunes for India in Australian Open Badminton Tournament
Indian badminton players had mixed fortunes on day-one of the Australian Open Super series on the first day the 27th May Wednesday in the first round.
There were no surprises as expected players like Saina Nehwal , K Srikanth and doubles pair of Ashwini and Jwala Gutta won. Sindhu, Gurusaidutt P. Kashyap and mixed doubles pair of Ashwini and Pranav failed to move to next round.
First the winning account –
Top World ranked and second seeded Saina Nehwal had an easy victory over Malaysian Cheah Lyddia 21-12 and 21-10. Fourth seed K Shrikant, lost the first game to Danish player Hans Krsitian 14-21, but came back strongly to win the second game 21-8. He began third set again with poor momentum and was trailing 16-20. But somehow he came back remarkably to get four points in a row and continued to earn two more points, the game and the match. Indian’s third win came due to popular women’s doubles pair of Ashwinin Ponnappa and Jwala Gutta beating Dutch pair of Samantha Barning and Iris Tabeling in just 29 minutes by the score of 21-13 in both the games.
Not so Lucky –
Parupalli Kashyap had to bite the dust as he lost a marathon battle that lasted an hour and 21 minutes to the sixth seed Chinese Zhengming Wang 26-24,8-21,20-22. Sindhu also lost to a tough fight against Chineses Yihan Wang . Sindhu won the first game 21-18 but in next two games could not match the opponent losing 15-21 and 23-25. The other loss was of Gurursai Dutt who lost to another Chinese Chen 21-15,9-21 and 17-21. The mixed pair of ASHWINI AND Pranav the qualifiers lost tamely to Korean pair of Choi Solgyu and Eom Hye Won 19-21 and 14-21 in just 35 minutes.
