Saina Nehwal defeated Sun Yu in the finals of Australian Open Super Series played in Sydney just a few moments. The match went to three sets before Saina won the match 11-21,21-14 and 21-19.
In the first game, Saina Nehwal began off to a positive start taking a 4-2 lead. The Chinese opponent came back and took 7 successive points to take 9-4. At the interval Sun Yu took a commanding 11-6 lead. After the interval, Saina tried to make a comeback but Sun Yu put the pressure on the Indian player. Sun Yu won the first set by 21-11.
In the second both players fought for each point. From 7-8 down Saina took 4 successive points to take an 11-8 lead. After the interval, Sun Yu reduced the gap to only 1 point to 10-11. The Chinese opponent made unforced errors. Saina Nehwal looked in great control and won the second set 21-14 easily to force the match into the decider.
In the third and deciding set, it was a neck to neck battle from both the players. Whenever a player wants to take the lead the other player comes back into the match. At the interval, Saina Nehwal had a slender lead of 11-10. After the interval, Saina played excellent badminton and did not allow Sun Yu to play her natural game. Sun Yu tried her best but Saina held her nerves to win the set 21-19.
Saina Nehwal had won the Australian Open Super Series in 2014. This is a much-needed confidence booster for Saina before the Rio Olympics.
