With just days remaining for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, the Indian contingent has faced a major setback. India’s ace shuttler Saina Nehwal Opts out of the games due to an injury. Saina Nehwal had won the Gold Medal in the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games.
Saina, the winner of 2014 Australian Open Super Series is one of India’s finest prospects for winning a gold medal in the games. But unfortunately, Saina sustained blisters on both her feet, took some time to recover and had very less time to practise for the games. There are also talks that she might be facing a knee injury and didn’t hit the court for the past one week.
It is learnt that Saina’s ticket to Glasgow has reached Hyderabad and she won’t be boarding her flight to the Scottish capital. The officials of Badminton Association of India (BAI) and some coaching members of the Indian team tried to convince her to fly to London but she is not willing to take any risks that might see her absent in the circuit for a long time.
The officials believes that a half fit Saina would deliver a Gold for India. Saina’s coach Gopi Chand was not available to comment on her absence. As Saina Nehwal opts out of the Commonwealth Games, now it’s mainly left to P.V Sindhu to win India to a Gold medal in the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. The Indian women’s badminton team is set to leave the country later today has chances of winning two golds, one from Sindhu in singles and the other from the tournament favourites Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa.
