2017 ICC Champions Trophy: India Vs Sri Lanka – India’s Predicted XI

Following clinical performance against arch-rivals Pakistan, Virat Kohli-led formidable India is brimming with confidence for highly-anticipated clash against Sri Lanka after routing Pakistan by 124 runs in their opening fixture of Group B at Edgbaston in Birmingham on June 4.

The super Sunday clash has further scripted history as over 24,000 fans have had witnessed the marquee clash live at the stadium which was the highest turn-out of spectators in Birmingham.

Coming to their top-order, it was quite impressive and solid show as everybody was among runs and wickets, the players further helped the side to gain the momentum for the remainder of the two games in the group stage of the eighth edition of ICC Champions Trophy.

Kohli, who played anchor’s role alongside Rohit Sharma before Shikhar Dhawan set the cushion for the middle-order to rely on as 28-year-old skipper and experienced campaigner battered Pakistan bowling line-up in the last four overs in which they had amassed 72 runs – to post 319 for three on board.

Moreover, the performance from left-handed batsman Yuvraj Singh was significant as he has show some promise with the bat by battering Pakistani bowlers to bring his fifty at the strike-rate of 165.62.

The way India batted had shown patience plays a vital role in the 50-over format even after slow start before picking the fours when they settled at the crease as rain stopped the game thrice.

Overview:

As the combination has rattled Asian counterpart Pakistan by giving all-round performance, they are eyeing to repeat the same performance against Sri Lanka as they will clash on June 8 at The Oval to seal their semi-final spot owing to remarkable show.

The Men in Blue would be giving the best shot against the Angelo Mathews-led Lions.

While taking weather forecast in view there are the possibility of showers during the game, Virat Kohli would be aware about the preface of the Duckworth-Lewis Method which mostly benefit team batting second.

However, considering the fact, out of six matches, teams batting first have claimed four wins as Australia and New Zealand and Bangladesh versus Australia games were washed-out owing to the inclement weather.

The weather forecast hasn’t been good as matches were affected by the rain which has irked the spectators as it made things quite tough for the ground men in the middle.

Talking Points:

It’s highly unlikely India would tinker with the Playing XI which they fielded against Pakistan at the Edgbaston.

But adding to the experience, Kohli might introduce veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin against Sri Lanka which struggled against leg-spinner Imran Tahir in their tournament opener.

All-rounder Hardik Pandya has been revelation, while showing the nerves, the 23-year-old smashed three consecutive sixes on the bowling of left-arm orthodox spinner Imad Wasim before claiming two important wickets including Pakistan skipper Sarfraz Ahmed.

India would be aiming to pick early wickets in order to put extra pressure on Sri Lankan batters which has the blend of youth and experience in the line-up.

Coming to the bowling front, out of five bowlers, four bowlers were among the wickets which further saw Umesh Yadav picking three wickets.

However, bowling at the economy of 4.60, it is expected Jasprit Bumrah could make a way for Ashwin to bowl in tandem with Ravindra Jadeja as both make a threatening combination in bowling department for opposition.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who was the Purple Cap holder in the recently concluded Indian Premier League, would be eyeing to swing the ball to pile up the miseries for Sri Lankan batters which seemed rusty.

Team India is a complacent side and is capable of pulling the remarkable performances –to defend the coveted title as the grand finale is scheduled for June 18.

Here’s the Predicted XI of Team India:

Virat Kohli (Skipper), Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Yuvraj Singh, MS Dhoni (Wk), Kedhar Jadhav, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Umesh Yadav.
