2017 ICC Champions Trophy: Well Done Team India, Says Ravichandran Ashwin After Win Against Pakistan

Ravichandran Ashwin has lauded Team India after the defending champions began their ICC Champions Trophy campaign in a spectacular fashion, defeating arch-rivals Pakistan by 124 runs win (DLS method) at Edgbaston on Sunday ( June 4).

After being put into bat first, the defending champions went off to a solid start with Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan adding 136 runs before the latter was dismissed by Shadab Khan for 68.

Rohit along with captain Virat Kohli then laid the foundation for a big total but just when he would have looked to shift gears, he was run-out for 91. Kohli, who was struggling to play his usual aggressive game when Rohit was out, was then joined in the middle by Yuvraj Singh and the veteran’s arrival completely changed the course of the match.

The southpaw scored 53 off just 32 balls to give the innings a much-needed impetus before Kohli also hit the top gear, as the duo added 93 runs for the third wicket in just 59 balls. The innings ended with Hardik Pandya hitting sixes off the first three balls of left-arm spinner Imad Wasim’s last over of the innings, as the Men in Blue posted a massive 319 for three in the rain-curtailed innings that was reduced to 48 overs.

In reply, Pakistan, who were set a target of 289 in 41 overs, also went off to a good start with opener Azhar Ali and Ahmed Shehzad adding 47 runs. However, once Shehzad was dismissed, Pakistan kept on losing wickets at regular intervals and was eventually finished on 164 for nine, with injured last man Wahab Riaz unable to bat due to an injury he suffered while bowling.

The win is the best possible start for India and the way all of their players clicked, it will be a morale-booster for them as they will be looking to defend the title.

R Ashwin, meanwhile, took to Twitter to congratulate the team on the magnificent win. The off-spinner, who was left out of the starting eleven, also praised the batsmen for their superlative efforts.

“Great team effort, studded with some outstanding individual performances. Well done Team India. @imVkohli @imjadeja @YUVSTRONG12 @ImRo45 ?.,” tweeted the ace spinner.
