2021 T20 World Cup may be hosted by Sri Lanka or the United Arab Emirates who have been selected as backup venues by ICC to host the World Cup as the situation of the Covid-19 pandemic is still not improving in India. If the situation does not get better in India in 2021, Sri Lanka or UAE may be seen hosting the 2021 World Cup.
The 2020 T20 World Cup was originally scheduled in Australia but was postponed to 2021 in India. International Cricket Council (ICC) the world’s governing cricket body has announced that India will have the right to host the men’s T20 World Cup in 2021 and will be followed by Australia in 2022.
However, it was reported that Sri Lanka and UAE are the backup venues to host the T20 World Cup as the situation due to COVID 19 is still not looking to brighten up. A backup option is however mandatory and is a regular protocol for ICC, but the focus will be more on the backup options due to the Covid-19 pandemic which has claimed more than 45000 deaths in India and saw more than 2.3 million cases.
2021 T20 World Cup: BCCI May Not Host 2021 T20 WC, IPL, and 2023 ODI World Cup -All Three Simultaneously
India will also host the 2023 ODI World Cup as the Board of Cricket Control for India, BCCI will have a tough time to accommodate hosting the 2023 ODI World Cup, T20 World Cup, and Indian Premier League back to back.
The BCCI may not want to host all three premier events in subsequent years. The T20 World Cup was originally scheduled to take place in Australia in September 2020 but was inevitably postponed at a recently concluded meeting where it was decided Australia will host the 2022 edition and India the previous one in 2021.
2021 T20 World Cup: BCCI To Observe Keenly IPL In UAE
The BCCI has given the necessary clearance to conduct IPL 2020 in the United Arab Emirates and BCCI would keenly be observing the safety to ensure the feasibility of conducting the T20 World Cup if the need arises. IPL 2020 was also postponed from March and will be held abroad for the third time in the Emirates from September 19 and will conclude with the finals taking place on November 10.
Indian Premier League, where several former and current international cricketers take active participation in eight franchises, will be played in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and Dubai. IPL was also held in South Africa in 2009 and partly in UAE in 2014, due to elections in India. BCCI is also trying to conduct scheduling the T20 and first-class domestic tournaments in December provided the situation gets better in India.
