England openers Jason Roy and and Alex Hales on Friday shared a huge partnership of 256 runs that shattered a cluster of records.

Earlier, Sri Lanka struggled to 254-7 despite winning the toss and choosing to bat first on a pitch that was looking ideal to bat. The Sri Lankan batsmen got good start but none of them converted them into a big score as a result their innings never got the impetus to score a big total.

Both English openers made centuries, with Hales 133 not out and Roy 112 not out as they chased down Sri Lanka’s paltry total of 254 in only 34.1 overs. The convincing win helped England to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series after the first game was tied.

The 256-runs partnership shared by the opening duo is now the highest opening stand ever made for England in one-day cricket. The previous record was held by former openers Marcus Trescothik and Vikram Solanki, who shared a partnership of 200 runs against South Africa at The oval on 28 June 2003. The duo also broke the record of highest partnership in ODI for England for any wicket.The previous record was held by Andrew Strauss and Jonathon Trott, when they shared a partnership of 250 against Bangladesh in 2010.

The record partnership also broke the long-standing opening partnership record against Sri Lanka set by former Indian openers Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly.

One of the most successful openers in the history of game, Ganguly and Tendulkar shared a partnership of 252 runs for the first wicket at Colombo (RPS) in 1998.

The Hales-Roy stand is now the third highest against Sri Lanka for any wicket, after 318 by Indian duo of Ganguly and Rahul Dravid and 267* by New Zealand batsmen Luke Ronchi and Grant Elliot.

The win also helped England seal the first Super-Series. They had led by 10 points to two after the Tests, and following the tie at Trent Bridge this victory took England into an unassailable 13-3 lead, with three more one-dayers and a T20 international still to play.
