Ashes 2017/18: Twitter Reacts As Day One Evenly Shared
Nov 23, 2017 at 2:39 PM
England finished day one of the first Test on 196/4 after winning the toss and opting to bat first at the Gabba in Brisbane. Almost two hours of the day were lost due to rain just after the lunch break. James Vince and Jake Ball were given a chance in the first Test along with, one all-rounder in Moeen Ali and four fast bowlers in the England squad. In the Australian department, Cameron Bancroft earned his maiden Test cap as David Warner and Shaun marsh were fit to play in the first Test after reports of injuries to both the players on the eve of the match.
After losing wicket of Alastair Cook in the third over of the match with just two runs on the board, number three batsman James Vince and Mark Stoneman combined and steadied the England innings as the two were involved in a 125 runs partnership. Stoneman was then clean bowled with a beauty from Pat Cummins at 53.
Vince looked set for his maiden Test century on his Ashes debut but was dismissed a courtesy brilliant piece of fielding by Nathan Lyon. Joe Root was trapped in front of the stumps giving Cummins his second wicket of the innings.
Dawid Malan (28*) and Moeen Ali (13*) were at the crease when bad light stopped play on the first day.
Let’s have a look how Twitter reacted after day one’s play.
Bit of a stalemate really on day 1 of the #Ashes. Neither side can claim to have gained territory.

Losing 4 wickets on day 1 is probably better than I expected; encouraging that newer guys scored runs, worried about Cook; if pitch continues to spin, could be hard to bat on day 5 #Ashes #AUSvENG

Superb effort from England’s #ashes rookies. Hoping not to wake up to the dreaded news of a collapse. Stick at it lads.

Still in the test after first day, always a bonus. Good knocks from Stonewall and Vince. Stupid r.o. on first day of a test. #hugefine #Ashes #fb

Honours even. Good first day. Vince and Stoneman impressive, Lyon effective. Interesting to see if the pitch wakes up like they say. Warner will be key. #ashes

I feel like a child again; the combined excitement of waking up to the Ashes and my birthday I don’t quite know what to do with myself! 🙈🏏. #Ashes

Steve Smith. Takes second new ball in poor light when Lyon is on top.
Hoses away a review.

Steve Smith's appealing is rubbish. He just runs at the umpire and he's done it numerous again times today. Sort it out. #Ashes
