Ashish Nehra Backs MS Dhoni to Play Till the 2020 Twenty20 World Cup

Former Indian pacer Ashish Nehra who recently retired from international cricket came out in support of Mahendra Singh Dhoni after his recent dip in form in the shortest format of the game. Nehra said that he foresees Dhoni donning the Indian colors at least till the 2020 World Twenty20.

Very recently former cricketers like VVS Laxman and Ajit Agarkar had asked the team management to look beyond Dhoni in the T20I’s and had even said that he should pave the way for the youngsters in the T20 format.

Dhoni came under heavy criticism after his rather slow knock of 49 of 37 deliveries during the Rajkot match which India lost by 40 runs. He failed to middle the ball, and when his big shots did come out, the match had already gone in favor of the visitors. However, Nehra supported Dhoni and conceded the fact that the former captain should be allowed to play as long as his body permits him to do. He also added that had he been the coach of the captain he would make Dhoni play at least two to three years more.

‘In every house, you need an elder one, and he is there. I hope until next two to three years or as long as his body allows he plays. Cricket is a game of conditions definitely, and it is not easy to perform. If it was in mind or if I am coach or captain I will be in his head that he has to play. I am not saying he doesn’t perform he has to play. He is the first guy who will raise his hand and say I am retiring if he is not performing. But I personally feel we should leave at MS Dhoni and let him play cricket,’ Nehra was quoted as saying by ANI.

‘He is one guy who is very honest with himself and the country. So, he should definitely play. I see him even to play T20 World Cup in 2020. If I can be a fast bowler at the age of 39. So, with MS Dhoni and his fitness, he can play,’ he added.

Nehra also didn’t want to compare the captaincy styles of Dhoni and Kohli as both are two different personalities and hence there should be no comparison between the two. Nehra made his international debut way back in the year 1999 and bagged a total of 235 wickets in 164 international matches.
