Ashwin becomes 9th Indian bowler to take 200 wickets in Test cricket

The Indian off-spin bowler R. Ashwin has just become ninth Indian bowler to scalp 200 wickets in Test cricket. He achieved this record in the ongoing first Test match between India and New Zealand at Kanpur. Before the start of this game, Ashwin had 193 wickets in his account but he made a big jump from 193 to 200 in no time thus becoming the ninth Indian bowler to enter this elite list. He claimed 4 wickets in the first innings followed by 3* in the second innings of New Zealand innings.

Ashwin is the fastest Indian bowler to scalp 200 wickets and second fastest overall.

Ashwin is just second off-spinner to achieve this record for India, Harbhajan Singh being the first one in the list. Harbhajan has 417 wickets to his name in 103 Test matches at an average of 32.46. R. Ashwin has an average if 24.96*. Anil Kumble, the highest wicket taker for India bowled with an average of 29.65.

Going by the numbers it seems that if R. Ashwin plays for 10-15 years more, then surely he may end up being highest wicket taker for India. Though Ravindra Jadeja with an average of 23.42 possesses the best average in Test cricket but he is ineffective on foreign soil and is sometimes dropped as well. Ashwin’s average is quite near to that of Muttiah Muralitharan, the highest wicket-taker in Test cricket. Murali averages bowled with an average of 22.72 in Test cricket. Though there is no comparison between Ashwin and the great Muralitharan but still Ashwin has shown enough talent to call him the next big thing in Test cricket. Along with time and passage, he will grow and he has the capability to become or surpass Muttiah Muralitharan.

Currently, Ashwin is ninth highest wicket taker for India in Test cricket with 200* scalps. With 142 scalps in ODI’s, he stands on 13th rank in that list. The highest wicket taker of shortest format of the game for India has 52 victims in that format.

In an international career of 6 years, Ashwin has taken giant strides and have gone on to replacing the Harbhajan Singh, who was the part of team India for more than 10 years. Not only ball, Ashwin contributes with the bat as well which is evident from the fact that he is the highest run scorer and highest wicket taker for India in Test cricket this year.
