Australia’s white-ball captain Aaron Finch has revealed that their team management is still searching for the 11 players which can lead them to victory in the One Day International (ODI).
As Australia is set to play three-match ODI series from Friday (11 September), Finch has expressed that his side still needs to improve in a lot of areas to beat the World Cup 2019 winner. He opined that they are searching for the best formula from the last couple of years in one day format.
“Over the last couple of years, we’re still searching for our best formula and our best 11 players day in, day out in the one-day format,” he said.

Aaron Finch said that they had given decent performances in away or home ODI matches but have not been consistent. The Australian skipper opened up that they had been working during the COVID-19 break to remove the loopholes in the team to prepare themselves for the World Cup 2023 scheduled in India.
“I don’t think there’s been any secret to that. There’s been a great opportunity that we probably haven’t nailed in this format. We’ve played some really good cricket in patches and some indifferent cricket in other patches.”
“I think it’s just finding a consistent selection formula,” he said. “We did a lot of work in the Covid break on how we think we can structure our one-day cricket and where we think we need to get to for that 2023 World Cup.
England’s ODI game has been their benchmark: Aaron Finch
Talking about the upcoming series against England, Finch said that they didn’t leave any opportunity to come back in the game. As per him, England has several players who can take away the game on their side.
“They keep coming at you,” he said. “There’s no part in a 20 over game or a 50-over game that you can take your foot off the gas because there will be someone there to take the opportunity away from you.”
Aaron Finch further heaped praise on England’s team stating that they had been exceptional in shorter formats. He believes that Eoin Morgan led side has improved since 2016 and their one-day game had been the benchmark. The captain is looking up for the challenge in the series.
“I think their form in white-ball cricket has been exceptional in both formats over the last few years,” he added. “Obviously their one-day game has probably been the benchmark since probably 2016 so it’s going to be a great challenge.”
Aaron Finch, including other players who are bound with IPL franchise, will move to the UAE after playing the last ODI match on 16 September.
