Virat Kohli could not have asked for a better start to the new year. The India skipper, on Monday, achieved a feat that none of his illustrious predecessors had achieved in the past – a Test series win in Australia. Poor weather did not let the teams take the field on day five due to which the game ended in a draw. Consequently, India bagged the series 2-1. The tourists had already taken an unassailable lead after winning the first and third Test of the four-match series.
That India are more than likely to win the series was very much clear when they posted a massive 622 for 7 in their first innings.
Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishabh Pant starred with the bat by scoring stupendous tons while Mayank Agarwal and Ravindra Jadeja scored fifties. Kuldeep Yadav then starred with the ball, picking up a five-wicket haul as India bowled out the hosts for just 300. Skipper Virat Kohli then asked the home side to follow-on on day four before bad light brought a premature end to the day. The weather on day five was even more worse as no play was possible at all.
It was the third consecutive day in Sydney that was affected by either bad light or rain. Play was eventually called off, sending the Indian players and fans into delirium. Kohli and teammates celebrated by thanking supporters who had stuck around despite the showers.
India had previously failed to winย a Test series in Australia in 11 previous attempts. The winless run had started way back in 1948. In the series, India also registered their first Test win since 2008. Soon after the historic triumph, Virat Kohli took to Twitter to express his delight, writing:
So proud to be a part of this team, great feeling! ? This is not just a team this is a family. ? Onwards and upwards from here on. ?????? @BCCI
