Balwinder Singh Sandhu applies for Team India coach role

Former Indian pacer Balwinder Singh is the latest to apply for the high-profile Team India coach job and has expressed his confidence of gaining one of the most coveted jobs in the cricketing world.

“Yes, I have applied for the job. I did it last evening and I am quite confident, although I know that Ravi Shastri is the front-runner,” Sandhu told PTI on Wednesday.

He has now joined Ravi Shastri (former team director), Sandeep Patil (Chief of selection committee) and former pacer Venkatesh Prasad who are all looking to grab the opportunity to coach Team India.

June 10 is the last date to apply as per the BCCI deadline after which one on one interviews will take place to decide the new coach for Team India who will take charge against West Indies away from home next month.

The pacer has represented India in 8 tests and 22 ODIs from 1982-84 after which he was dropped and never got a call back to the national team. He is also well known for the huge in-swinger he bowled to Gordon Greenidge during 1983 world cup final which opened a way for India break the best batting line up back then.

Sandhu said he has 25 years of coaching experience with various teams and was the first one to introduce video analysis for bowlers when he worked as the chief coach of the Mumbai Ranji Trophy team 15 years ago.

He has made his claim by saying, “I have coached Mumbai, MP and Baroda and also the (defunct) ICL teams. I understand spin bowling too as I started as a spin bowler. Bowling is my USP. I understand the psyche of the bowlers too and in tight situations, it’s the bowlers who win you games”.

It would be interesting to see who among the four would grab the coveted post as all of them have their own qualities.
