BCCI, the apex body of Indian cricket approved a 10-team Indian Premier League which is generally an eight-team affair, from 2022 onwards. The board is also in favour of cricket’s inclusion at 2028 Olympics but will seek more clarity from International Olympic Committee.

BCCI approved a 10-team IPL from 2022 edition at Annual General Meeting and are also in favour of cricket in Olympics whereas IPL, generally an 8 team affair, has witnessed 10 teams only once in 2011 in a season in its 13-year history while 9 teams were present in 2012 and 2013.

BCCI Gave Approval For 10 Team IPL From 2022 Onwards

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Thursday gave its approval for a 10-team Indian Premier League (IPL) from the 2022 edition at the Annual General Meeting in Ahmedabad.

The 2021 season of IPL will be played with the regular 8 teams and bids will be invited for the addition of two new teams from the 2022 season.

“At this point, the 10-team IPL, if BCCI intends to conduct it in 2021, will be a hurried one given that the tendering process and a mega auction will be difficult to organize in such a short span of time. It is only fair that the approval is taken and the big 94 match tournament is held in 2022,” a senior BCCI official said on the eve of the meeting.

The IPL witnessed 10 teams battling it out for the coveted trophy in 2011 whereas 9 IPL franchises played in the 2012 and 2013 seasons. Mumbai Indians were winners of IPL 2020.

BCCI To Support ICC’s Bid For Cricket’s Inclusion At 2028 Olympics

Meanwhile, the BCCI has announced they will support International Cricket Council’s (ICC) bid for the inclusion of cricket in 2028 Olympics after clarity from Indian Olympic Association.

There were also discussions held about women’s Test cricket but the final decision which will be taken by the apex council later. It might happen in 2021. Women’s domestic cricket will most likely happen after the conclusion of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy as decided.

Ongoing interviews to pick the new national selectors are already on the process, the results of which will be announced soon. It was unanimously decided that all first-class players competing in domestic circles, both men and women, will be suitably compensated for the curtailed domestic season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rajiv Shukla was officially appointed the BCCI’s vice-president, a post which was vacated by his protégé Mahim Verma from Uttarakhand.

It was also learnt that the general body decided to favour current president Sourav Ganguly continuing as a director in the ICC Board. Secretary Jay Shah will be the alternate director as well as India’s representative at the Chief Executive Committee meets of the global body.
