BCCI Likely To Advertise For India Coach Job As Ravi Shastri & Co Near Contract Completion
While all the eyes are on the upcoming World Cup, there is little denying that the contract of Ravi Shastri and his deputies are hogging quite a significant amount of attraction. The coaching staff will run out of contract in July this year after the end of the World Cup. Consequently, the BCCI will have to take a decision soon. Shastri was appointed in mid-2017 after the conclusion of the ICC Champions Trophy when Anil Kumble had sensationally stepped down as head coach of the team. Along with Shastri, the contracts of bowling coach Bharat Arun, batting coach Sanjay Bangar and fielding coach R Sridhar will also expire at the end of this year’s World Cup.
Recently, media reports suggested that the Committee of Administrators can give an extension to all the four coaches up to November 2020, that is till next year’s World Twenty20 in Australia.
However, ESPNcricinfo has now reported that the BCCI is likely to advertise for the coach’s job. The interview process will reportedly held between the time sandwiched between the completion of the World Cup and the tour of West Indies. The World Cup will end on July 14 before India leave for the Caribbeans for the series which is scheduled to start late July. The report claimed that after the interview, the BCCI will take a call on whether to appoint an interim coaching staff for the West Indies tour or whether to allow an extension to Shastri and his team.
The final call on whom to appoint the coach will once be once again taken by the three-man Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman. The trio has appointed the last two head coaches of the team. The report also stated that Shastri will be a direct entry in the interview.
Ravi Shastri & Co. have done a fine job since taking charge in 2017. Earlier this year, India won their first-ever Test series and bilateral ODI series in Australia. The Men in Blue then won the ODI series in New Zealand 4-1. Last year, the team won ODI series and T20I series in South Africa before winning the Nidahas Trophy. It was followed by a T20I series win in England and a triumphant campaign in the Asia Cup.
Currently, the team is No 1 in Tests and No 2 in the ODI and No 2 Twenty20 ICC rankings. today.
