Brad Hogg Defends Rishabh Pant After Mohali Show
Rishabh Pant is making the news for all the wrong reasons since Sunday night. The youngster had a poor outing behind the stumps and criticism has followed in since then. India failed to defend 358 runs against Australia and many feel that Pant was one of the biggest reasons behind it since he missed a stumping at a crucial juncture.
Pant had big shoes to fill as he had replaced MS Dhoni but he failed to live up to the expectation behind the stumps after playing an impressive cameo with the bat. It all started in the in the 44th over of the Australian innings when Pant missed a straight forward stumping chance to dismiss Ashton Turner on 38. Turner went on to play a match-winning knock of 84 from just 43 balls and help Australia level the 5-match series at 2-2.
He also missed several other chances as the fans in the stadium made their displeasure clear shouting ‘Dhoni, Dhoni…’.
The criticism has only escalated after India lost the game. Batting first, India posted a massive total of 358 for 9. Shikhar Dhawan starred with the bat, scoring 143 while Rohit Sharma played an impressive knock of 95. However, Usman Khawaja (91) and Peter Handscomb (117) revived Australia’s chances before Turner took the team over the line.
There are now also calls to drop Pant from the team for the upcoming World Cup. However, former Australia bowler Brad Hogg has come out in defence of the youngster. Hogg feels Pant can play as a specialist batsman as the ex-spinner agreed with Aakash Chopra’s views on Twitter.
“Spot on, I think Pant can play as a front line batter in the middle order. You need a spare keeper on tour. Also, another Left hander won’t hurt.”

Earlier, Chopra had written:
“Also, bear in mind that IF Pant is picked for the World Cup, he WONT be playing ahead of Dhoni. And he WONT be keeping. So…it’s kinda unfair to judge him purely as a keeper. I thought he played a fairly decent knock today. Struck well.”
