CA announced 20-cricketers central contract for 2016-17

On Friday, Cricket Australia (CA) announced the new central contract of Australian male cricketers for 2016-17. CA named 20 cricketers in this new central contract. The contract will begin on 1st July 2016 and will run for exact 1 year.

There were 19 cricketers in the previous Australia’s central contract (2015-16). Out of them, some cricketers retired in between that times for which there were a number of positions available in the present year’s contract. Michael Clarke, Brad Haddin, Ryan Harris, Mitchell Johnson, Chris Rogers and Shane Watson – these 6 cricketers took retirement during 2015-16 central contract period.

In the new contract, CA added seven cricketers and those are – Nathan Coulter-Nile, John Hastings, Peter Nevill, Peter Siddle, Adam Voges, Usman Khawaja and Joe Burns.

However, leg-spinner Adam Zampa has not earned the central contract despite showing good performances in ODI and T20I.

During the announcement the new contract list, Chief selector Rod Marsh said, “The Australian team is set to embark on another busy year of international cricket and we believe the players chosen in this group are those that are right in contention to represent the country over the next 12 months.”

“There is a lot of talent within this group and we have confidence that the players chosen can be successful in all three forms of the game, against a range of opposition, in a variety of conditions.

“Following a number of high-profile retirements, we believe this group of players gives us a healthy blend of youth and experience to represent Australia at the highest level, allowing us the best chance of maintaining our number-one rankings in Test and ODI cricket, as well as improving our performances in the T20 format.”

Under an MOU, the minimum value of a CA contract for the 2016-17 season is $270,000 for each player while any player awarded an ‘upgrade’ contract will earn a minimum of $230,000.

To earn an upgraded contract, players must receive 12 upgrade points. These upgrade points are awarded on the following basis – five points per Test appearance, two for an ODI and one for each T20 International.

Name of 2016-17 Australian cricketers’ central contract: George Bailey, Joe Burns, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Patrick Cummins, James Faulkner, Aaron Finch, John Hastings, Josh Hazlewood, Usman Khawaja, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Peter Nevill, James Pattinson, Adam Voges, Peter Siddle, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, David Warner.
