Cricket Australia ban Steve Smith and David Warner for 12 months – Reports
Former Australian skipper Steve Smith and his deputy, David Warner will have to serve a 12 months ban as per reports in the wake of the ball tampering scandal. Meanwhile, both the cricketers can’t lead the side. Further, Cricket Australia gave a clean chit to coach Darren Lehmann, who will continue to work until 2019.
However, Cameron Bancroft, who used the tape to change the shape of the ball will face a nine-month ban according to the reports.
The ball-tampering incident took place on the third day in Cape Town, escalating the tension around what has been an ill-tempered series between South Africa and Australia.
Meanwhile, television footage showed Bancroft take what he said was a yellow tape out of his trouser pocket before rubbing the ball to change its condition.
However, later Smith said the team’s “leadership group” had a plan, carried out by Cameron Bancroft, to tamper with the ball to “get an advantage”.
Smith, Warner to face 12 months ban:
After a lot of drama that unfolded post the scandal, Cricket Australia is likely to hand a 12 months ban on Warner and Smith. Meanwhile, they along with Cameron Bancroft will not take any further part in the ongoing series and will fly back to Australia.
Meanwhile, both Smith and Warner will not lead any Aussie side for the next two years. Further, Smith will address the media upon landing in Sydney from the Rainbow Nation.
However, Cricket Australia is likely to make the official announcement later tonight.
In the meantime, Tim Paine will lead the Australian side in the rest of the series. Glenn Maxwell and Joe Burns will join the side as the replacements.
However, Warner, who stepped down from the captaincy of Sunrisers Hyderabad will take part in the league. While Smith will not feature in the league and cancel his contract. He is likely to go overseas and spend some time off with his family.
