Cricket has always been a brutal game not only for the players but also for the fans. Back in the days, there used to be no helmet and the batsman would be severely injured by the fast bowlers, who used to consistently clock 145 km/h. However, in the 1970s or 1980s, there were hardly any instances when the fans would be injured badly in the stadium. The batsmen were not known to play the big shots and thus the fans were safe in the stands.
However, in the current era, there are some hard-hitters of the ball like MS Dhoni, Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard to name a few. These batsmen possess the ability to hit the ball a long way in the stands and thus the fans are always in danger of getting hit.
We take a look at five instances when fans were injured in the stadium.
Sourav Ganguly smashed a six which hit an old English fan on the head
Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly was well known for his ability to hit sixes. The southpaw used to make good use of his feet against the spinners. Ganguly was at his best in the third Test match against England at Leeds, Headingley in 2002.
One of Ganguly’s three sixes of his 128 runs knock landed straight on the head of an old English fan and there was a lot of blood. Subsequently, the security took the fan to the hospital for immediate treatment.
