DDCA Cancels Virat Kohli Felicitation Ceremony In Wake Of Pulwama Attack
In the wake of the Pulwama attack, the Delhi & Districts Cricket Association (DDCA) has dropped plans to felicitate India captain Virat Kohli along with former batting stalwarts Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir. The attack, which took place on February 14, had claimed the lives of 44 CRPF personnels. Pakistan-based militancy group Jaish-e-Mohammed had taken the responsibility for the ghastly attack.
The Indian cricket fraternity has not shied away from showing its solidarity with the armed forces in the wake of the attack. Since then the cricketing fraternity has joined hands with the common mass to condemn the attack and pay tribute to the soldiers. The BCCI has already announced that there would be no opening ceremony for this year’s IPL. Instead, the budget allocated for the ceremony will be given to the family of the martyrs.
The players had also maintained a two-minute silence before the start of the first T20I against Australia. And Virat Kohli & Co. have now come up with another tribute. Last week, the players had donned military caps during the third ODI against Australia in a tribute to the armed forces.
And keeping in mind the general sentiment in the entire country, the DDCA has decided to postpone its felicitation programme. The DDCA had decided to felicitate the three stars before the start of the final ODI between India and Australia on Wednesday.
“We had plans of felicitating Sehwag, Gambhir and Kohli but we decided against it since BCCI is also not having an opening ceremony of the IPL,” DDCA President Rajat Sharma told PTI.
“We have also decided to donate Rs 10 lakh to Delhi Police’s Martyrs Fund. As of now, 90 percent of the tickets that was put on public sale has been sold out,” Sharma said.
Meanwhile, the ongoing five-match series between India and Australia is currently locked at 2-2. The fifth and final ODI in Delhi will decide the outcome of the series.
