England vs India 2018: Losing the Toss in Trent Bridge was a Blessing in Disguise for Virat Kohli – Sourav Ganguly

Former Indian captain, Sourav Ganguly has heaped praise on India for staging a remarkable comeback in the five-match Test series against England. India beat England by 203 at Trent Bridge, and Ganguly feels Virat Kohli losing the toss in Nottingham was a blessing in disguise for the side.

Ganguly feels India will be mentally strong because they were utterly ruthless in the 3rd Test in Trent Bridge. Writing for Times of India, Ganguly says India’s grit in Nottingham has helped them step away from the edge of a series loss.

“India, with Kohli leading the way, has stepped away from the edge of a series loss and they will be buoyant but at the same time shouldn’t over do it,” Ganguly said.

He feels not only did India outplay England in all three departments of the game, but they also put them under severe pressure ahead of the fourth Test at Southampton, which starts on Thursday.

“India staged a forceful and decisive comeback at Trent Bridge which has opened up the series and the pressure is fully back on England. It was India’s mindset which stood out as they confronted England and caught [Joe] Root and company unaware,” he observed.

Ganguly feels the loss of toss was a blessing in disguise for Kohli and Co in the 3rd Test in Nottingham. He thinks batting first was the correct decision which allowed them to push pressure on England.

“It was a blessing for India that they lost the toss [Trent Bridge] and England put them in and Virat Kohli should keep this in mind. Twice during the series, I felt he came with a mindset to field first,” the 46-year-old added.

Sourav Ganguly also hailed team India speedster Jasprit Bumrah who made a comeback in the previous game. He bagged a five-wicket haul in the 2nd innings, as the fat bowlers bagged 19 of the 20 wickets to fall for England.

“Trent Bridge was supposed to have been a happy hunting ground for Anderson and Broad, but it was the other way around. The way Bumrah, [Hardik] Pandya and Ishant [Sharma] bowled, it was indeed a treat for the connoisseurs of fast bowling. The length was outstanding as they pitched the ball up all the time. Bumrah is such a great addition to the side, continuing to show that if you can bring the ball back into the right-hander, you will always be a threat,” he wrote.
