Former Pakistan leg-spinner Abdul Qadir died on Friday (6th September) after suffering a massive cardiac arrest. He was 63-year-old.

According to the media report, Abdul Qadir was rushed to the Services Hospital in Lahore after suffering a massive cardiac arrest. But, the doctors failed to save him.

Qadir had one wife, four sons and one daughter. All his four sons, Rehman Qadir, Imran Qadir, Sulaman Qadir and Usman Qadir, have played first-class cricket. The 26-year-old Usman Qadir has played for Western Australia and the Big Bash League (BBL) team Perth Scorchers. Abdul Qadir’s younger brother Ali Bahadur also played first-class cricket.

On the other hand, Abdul Qadir’s daughter Noor Amna is the wife of Umar Akmal, who is a Pakistan international cricketer.

Abdul Qadir played international cricket from 1977 to 1993

Abdul Qadir was one of the greatest spinners in Pakistan cricket history. He made his international debut in December 1977 during the Lahore Test against England.

Later, in June 1983, Qadir made his ODI debut against New Zealand at Birmingham. On his ODI debut, Qadir had the bowling figures of 12-4-21-4 – it is currently the second-best bowling figures in ODI debut by a Pakistan bowler.

His best bowling figures in a Test innings were 37-13-56-9 against England at Lahore in November 1987. It is still the best bowling figures in a Test innings by a Pakistan bowler. In that game, he had the match bowling figures of 73-27-101-13 – the present third-best Test match bowling figures by a Pakistan bowler.

Qadir played his last Test in December 1990 (against West Indies at Lahore) and last ODI on 2nd November 1993 (against Sri Lanka at Sharjah).

The leg-spinner played 67 Tests and 104 ODIs where he took 236 and 132 wickets respectively. At once, he was Pakistan’s leading wicket-taker as a spinner (368 international wickets).

Now, Danish Kaneria (261 test wickets) is the most Test wicket-taker as a Pakistan spinner while Qadir is in the second position in this list. Moreover, as a Pakistan spinner, Qadir is presently the seventh most ODI wicket-taker and fourth-most international wicket-taker.

Abdul Qadir played 209 first-class matches and 147 List A games where he claimed 960 and 202 wickets respectively. Qadir stretched his professional cricket career till the 1995/96 season.
