Ever since Virat Kohli started churning out runs, he has been compared with the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, the most decorated batsman in the history of the game. And with Kohli scoring runs at a remarkable consistency, the comparison refuses to die down. Gautam Gambhir, who has played with both of them, opines that it is indeed difficult to pick the better between the two, but he went with Sachin Tendulkar. Gambhir also stated the reason for his selection.
Gautam Gambhir on Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar:
According to him, in the contemporary world, batters don’t have restrictions or challenges like the old times. He feels that Sachin Tendulkar played under more rigorous rules than Virat. Thus, Sachin is a better cricketer in ODIs than Team India captain, as per Gambhir.
“Sachin Tendulkar, because probably with one white ball and four fielders inside the circle, not five fielders outside, it will be Sachin Tendulkar for me. It’s difficult because Virat Kohli has done phenomenally well but I think the rules have changed as well, which has helped a lot of new batters,” Gambhir said on ‘Cricket Connected’.
“The new generation, with 2 new balls, no reverse swing, nothing for the finger spin, five fielders inside for the 50 overs, probably that makes batting much easier,” Gambhir added.
“Look at how Sachin Tendulkar has played, different rules, that time 230 to 240, was a winning total. Probably I’ll go with Sachin Tendulkar if we see the longevity and flow of the one-day cricket format,” Gambhir made his point.
Sachin Tendulkar has built uncountable records among which some are still unbroken. However, Virat Kohli is close to breaking the legendary cricketer’s record. Last year, Kohli broke Tendulkar’s record to become the fastest batsman to record 10,000 runs in ODI cricket. Kohli achieved the feat in 205 innings while Tendulkar took 259.
The 31-year-old has scored an incredible 43 centuries in ODIs and needs seven more to break Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI tons.
