Glenn Maxwell still upbeat about test spot

A few weeks ago, Australian batsman and part time spinner Glenn Maxwell had expressed his desire to play more tests for Australia. Maxwell, who has played tests against India and Pakistan in away conditions, was desperate to get another opportunity. Agonizingly for the all rounder, he wasn’t named in Australia’s squad for the upcoming test series against Sri Lanka.

Maxwell though, hasn’t taken rejection to heart, but is rather more determined to make it to the test squad. The all rounder in his media interaction said that he was looking to work out on his bowling skills, in order to press his case for a selection in test matches. “Competing with Nathan Lyon is always going to be tough,” Maxwell said.”I’ve just got to improve my batting to the point where they can’t resist having me as an all-rounder and a back-up to him.”

Admitting his limitations with the bat, Maxwell said that he couldn’t rely on his batting alone to guarantee him a test spot. “I don’t think I can rest on just being a batsman. I know Steve Smith went that way when he lost his Test spot, not really bowling much at all. But I don’t think I can go that direction. I have to keep working on both parts of my game and make sure they’re good enough,” said Maxwell.

The flamboyant hitter though, was confident about Australia’s chances for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. “I was obviously a bit disappointed initially but having a look at the squad they’ve picked for Sri Lanka, I can understand. They’ve got all bases covered. I think it’s a squad that is going to win the series. It’s a really strong squad and I fully understand why I’m not in it,” Maxwell said.
