ICC Cricket World Cup 2019: England Opener James Vince Is Eyeing The World Cup Squad
English opening batsman James Vince is ready to push himself in the upcoming limited opportunities to earn a place for the forthcoming Cricket World Cup. As the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) selectors have already removed the regular limited-overs opener Alex Hales from the Cricket World Cup squad, Vince is ready to try hard to grab that place.
Since his international debut in 2015, Vince has played eight ODIs where he has scored 149 runs (average 24.83). He has scored only one half-century in ODI career (51 against Sri Lanka at Cardiff on 2nd July 2016).
Vince recently made his international comeback after ten months due to Alex Hales’ 21-day ban for using recreational drugs. He made his international comeback during recent Dublin ODI (3rd May) against Ireland where he scored 18 runs.
Later, in the one-off T20I against Pakistan (5th May) at Cardiff, the right-handed opening batsman provided a crucial start. Chasing down the 174 runs target, opener Vince scored 36 runs off 27 balls.
Vince is currently busy in the ongoing five-match home ODI series against Pakistan. After this home series, England will begin their journey in the 2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
All I can do is my best when I do play – James Vince
ECB selectors have already announced the 15-member preliminary World Cup squad. While they can change this squad until 23rd May, they have already dropped Alex Hales from this squad. As the selectors haven’t added another member in this World Cup squad yet, it is still open for everyone. Vince is eyeing to grab this spot by giving his best in the upcoming matches.
Vince recently said, “It’s the nature of the way the white-ball side has gone over the last three or four years. They’ve played some magnificent cricket and got to No.1 in the world, so it’s been a tough team to break into.
“When I have played, it’s been to pop-in for a game, knowing that when the main guys are fit, I’d be out again unless I did something remarkable. All I can do is my best when I do play, and try to force my way into becoming a regular in the squad and then taking chances.”
Pleased to start the season well – James Vince
Vince has earned his latest international call-up after playing some impressive cricket in recent domestic limited-overs matches. In the ongoing Royal London One-Day Cup 2019, Vince has scored 430 runs in six innings (average 71.66). The Hampshire cricketer has scored one century and two half-centuries in this domestic tournament.
During this tournament, Vince scored 190 runs in one match against Gloucestershire at Southampton (26th April 2019). Coming to bat at no.3 in that match, Vince scored 190 runs off 154 balls (15 fours and 5 sixes).
Earlier, he also played two consecutive half-centuries in this tournament. After scoring 56 runs against Kent, he also scored 95 runs against Glamorgan.
After achieving a great start in this season, Vince is now pushing himself to feature in the upcoming CWC.
He said, “I got asked about aspirations at the start of the summer in regards to white-ball cricket and I said I’d do as well as I can for Hampshire. Pleased to start the season well, and as things turned out, I’m here and involved now.
“The plan for the rest of the series is to get a game or two and, hopefully, push my case ahead of the World Cup.”
The host side England will start their journey in the upcoming Cricket World Cup through the opening match. On the opening day (30th May) of this tournament, England will face South Africa at The Oval (London).
