ICC Women’s World T20I: Mithali Raj Scores Fifty As India Crush Pakistan

India thrashed arch-rivals Pakistan to register their second win in as many games and move one step closer to a semifinal berth in the ICC Women’s World T20I.

Right from the toss till the end of the game, not much went right for Pakistan. India’s decision to bowl first looked spot on early as they reduced the bitter rivals to 30 for 3. Veda Krishnamurthy took a good low catch at first slip to send back Ayesha Zafar off Arundhati Reddy’s bowling in the opening over. Then two run-outs – Omaima Sohail (3) and Javeria Khan (17) – left them reeling at 30 for 3.

But the butterfingered Indian players soon let Pakistan off the hook by dropping as many as four catches. Consequently, Bismah Maroof and Nida Dar scored fifties and added 94 runs for the fourth wicket to bail their side out of trouble.

Krishnamurthy put down a simple catch to offer Nida a reprieve on 15 and a short while later, Poonam Yadav missed an opportunity to allow Nida to continue her rescue act. Poonam also did not go for a catch off her own bowling when Maroof had miscued an attempted big hit.

But both the players were guilty of running on the danger area despite warnings, giving India five bonus runs. With the set batters both departing after their fifties, Pakistan failed to close out the innings strongly. What further made things tough for them was when India received another five runs in penalty for an offence that happened off the last ball of the innings. Pakistan eventually ended on 133 for 7.

With 10 runs already in the bag while chasing a modest 134, India reached home with an over to spare. Veteran Mithali Raj led the show with a composed fifty.

Opening the innings, Mithali scored 56 off 47 with the help of seven fours.  And any hopes of seeing a fightback from Pakistan soon ended after India openers gave their team a flying start. Mithali and Smriti Mandhana added 73 runs for the first wicket before the latter departed after scoring 26.

Youngster Jemimah Rodrigues, who had scored a fine fifty in the previous game, failed to score big this time. She made just 16 before hitting one straight into the hands of bowler Nida Dar. Mithali, on the other hand, departed in the 18th over. But by then, India needed just 11 runs. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur (14*) and Veda (8*) then ensured India complete the victory without suffering any further hiccup.

Brief scores:

Pakistan 133/7 in 20 overs (Bismah Maroof 53, Nida Dar 52; Poonam Yadav 2-22) lost to India 137/3 in 19 overs (Mithali Raj 56, Smriti Mandhana 26; Nida Dar 1-17) by 7 wickets.
