ICC World Cup 2019: Injury Scare For Vijay Shankar Ahead Of Afghanistan Clash

It has been a brilliant season so far for Vijay Shankar. Out of nowhere, he landed in the Indian team for ICC World Cup 2019 and also bagged a couple of wickets in his debut world cup game. But, unfortunately, he suffered an injury ahead of the clash against Afghanistan team.

Vijay Shankar reportedly gave the Indian team yet another injury scare. Shankar was batting in the nets on Wednesday when a yorker from Jasprit Bumrah hit the all-rounder’s toe, causing him some pain in the aftermath.

The all-rounder along with Bhuvneshwar joined the Indian team at training in Southampton on Thursday (June 20) but worked on the sides with physio Patrick Farhat. However, a team source informed PTI that there’s nothing to worry as of now.

“Yes, Vijay was in pain but it has subsided by the evening. Hopefully, there’s nothing scary,” the source said.

On Thursday, Shankar was seen walking around in slippers with a slight limp. Later he tried jogging wearing gym trainers but gave up after half a lap. He then did some basic exercises as others took part in usual fielding drills as well as net sessions.

With Shikhar Dhawan already ruled out of the tournament due to thumb fracture and Bhuvneshwar Kumar out for two games due to a hamstring strain, Shankar’s injury will only increase tension for the team management.

Well, it would be interesting to see how things would pan out for the young Vijay Shankar. With a couple of days left for India’s scheduled game, Vijay Shankar would love to make get his toe fit.

In a case of injury, most probably, one between Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant will get the nod. There is a good chance for Kedar Jadhav or MS Dhoni going up in the order to use Dinesh Karthik as the finisher for the team.
