Mohammed Shami became the second Indian bowler to take a hat-trick in World Cup on Saturday after Chetan Sharma’s feat against New Zealand in the 1987 edition. Shami’s is the 10th hat-trick in the history of the 50-over World Cup.

In a Facebook video, Chetan Sharma congratulated Shami for his achievement and welcomed him into the “hat-trick club”. In the video, Sharma can be seen displaying the pictures on his wall—those of the time when he took the World Cup hat-trick.
“It is always a great feeling when your own countryman achieves something you did so many years ago. When Shami got his third wicket, I was immediately transported to Nagpur’s VCA Ground 32 years ago,” he told TOI on Sunday.
Young generation will know me now – Chetan Sharma
Chetan Sharma recollects those memories when he was given a standing ovation when he entered into the plane after the victory. Further, the news reports on the Times of India has made his day back then, which he recollects following Mohammed Shami’s hat-trick.
“The current generation may not know what I achieved three decades ago, but now they will know thanks to Shami,” he said, “The young generation will now know that the first World Cup hat-trick was taken by an Indian.
“I had the world at my feet back then. The next day, when I boarded the flight with the team for the semifinal, all the passengers stood up and applauded for me as I made my way in. It was a memorable moment, I still get goose bumps thinking about it. To top that, the front page of Times of India too had my photo in it and it just made my day.”
