Amidst the praises for Virat Kohli regarding the gesture to Steve Smith during the game between India and Australia, the opening batsman of England Jonny Bairstow sees no point in asking the fans to behave in such a manner. Especially, during Ashes, Bairstow doesn’t feel that happening.

During the match, the Indian captain walked towards the crowd and asked them to stop booing the former Australian skipper and also gestured towards them to applaud good cricket instead. He later walked towards Smith and shook hands.

It won’t make any difference – Jonny Bairstow

Later, the Indian captain, Virat Kohli expressed his sympathy for Steve Smith and apologised on behalf of the crowd after the former Australia captain was heckled and booed by the Oval crowd which was dominated by the Indian contingent.

“I’ve read that Justin Langer, the Australia coach, and Virat Kohli have asked supporters, not to boo Steve Smith and Warner. I’m not sure that makes any difference,” England opening batsman Bairstow wrote in a column for The Telegraph.

“The fans will react however they want, particularly in the Ashes (which begins on Aug. 1 in Edgbaston). It is a bit pointless pleading with them not to boo Smith or Warner.”

Steve Smith and David Warner was banned for a year for the ball-tampering scandal in the Cape Town Test last year. They made their international comeback in this World Cup but have been at the receiving end of some poor crowd behaviour in England since they arrived.

However, it was a fine gesture from the Indian skipper Virat Kohli. But, as Jonny Bairstow said, it could be pointless for the England fans, as they wouldn’t miss the chance of mocking Australians. Despite that, the Indian fans accepted the request of Virat Kohli and stopped booing him.

It would be interesting to see how things would turn out for the duo in their next clash against England. Surely, the fans would like to get under the skins of the duo. The match between England and Australia will be played on Tuesday.
