ICC World Cup 2019: Sachin Tendulkar Wishes Shikhar Dhawan to Break his ICC record
In the fourteenth match of the tournament, India registered their second straight win against Australia. The cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar was impressed with the opener Shikhar Dhawan for his impeccable century. Dhawan made 117 runs off 109 balls which became his sixth ICC major tournament hundred in the 20 matches he’s played so far. Sachin Tendulkar is in awe with Dhawan’s batting and wishes him to break his record in England.
With his century in the last match, Dhawan has knocked his third World Cup hundred and sixth in ICC tournaments. The record for most centuries in the major ICC tournament is yet jointly held by Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly. Dhawan is just one century behind the two legendary batsmen. Meanwhile, Dhawan now shares the position with Kumar Sangakkara and Ricky Ponting in the list.
Master Blaster wants Dhawan to break his record in England
After his smashing performance even after having a thumb injury, the Master blaster expects Dhawan to break the record in this World Cup. He expects all the Indian batsmen to perform their best so that bowlers could unleash their magic.
“It (record break) better happen in this World Cup, Shikhar. You better do it in England. If that happens, it means India is doing well. We Indians, want all of you (batsmen) to go and do something special so that bowlers can come in and put pressure on the opposition,” said Sachin Tendulkar told India Today.
Tendulkar always believed in the ‘fighter’ that Shikhar Dhawan is.
Tendulkar also lauded the cricketer for his special ‘thumb-injuring’ knock. After his unsuccessful first match, Dhawan was being criticised for his performance. In the opening match, he could only score eight runs off 12 balls and gave away his wicket to Kagiso Rabada. His knock of 117 runs in the very next match, though, had shut all the big mouths. Tendulkar said that he believed the fighting spirit in Dhawan that would have only left the match had his thumb been broken.
“He answered it (criticism) beautifully. He scored a brilliant hundred today. He must be feeling fantastic. That’s one special feeling,” said the batting legend.
“Once you play for India, it’s a huge honour. These injuries take place every now and then. that doesn’t mean you leave the field and return to the pavilion. Having known the fighter Shikhar is, only when his thumb is completely gone and he can’t hold a bat, he would have gone back. I am not surprised Shikhar hung in there and made it count,” he added.
However, this wasn’t just Dhawan’s best century but was also 27th World Cup century for India. Thus, India now has the most centuries whereas Australia has 26 and Sri Lanka has 24. And now, Dhawan will be looking up to not only break the legend batsmen record but also will be looking to get the most runs for India. Next up India will be facing New Zealand on June 13. New Zealand sits at the top of the points table with three wins and six points.
