India have announced a talented squad under the leadership of Uttar Pradesh-born Priyam Garg for the upcoming Under-19 World Cup that will be held in South Africa in January-February 2019. Meanwhile, Garg’s UP teammate Dhruv Chand Jurel, the wicketkeeper-batsman, has been named as the vice-captain in the 15-member squad.

The four-time champions, who will defend their title next year, are part of Group A in the 16-team tournament – placed alongside first-time qualifier Japan, New Zealand and Sri Lanka. The top two teams from this round will progress to the Super League stage. India begin their campaign against Sri Lanka on January 19, followed by games against Japan and New Zealand on January 21 and January 24 respectively. The colts will play all their matches in Bloemfontein.

The squad possess the talented opener from Mumbai Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was one of the top run-getters during the tri-series in England earlier this year. The 17-year-old Yashasvi hogged the limelight smashing a double hundred in the Vijay Hazare Trophy for Mumbai. His opening partner Divyaansh Saxena and skipper Priyam Garg are also in spectacular form with the bat.

India also have quality bowling options which provide a perfect balance to this squad. Bihar’s Sushant Mishra and Kartik Tyagi from UP, two of the top wicket-takers during the tri-series in England also feature in the team along with Akash Singh and Vidyadhar Patil.

Meanwhile, India will play two preparatory series ahead of the mega event. They will play a three-match series against South Africa followed by a quadrangular series including South Africa, Zimbabwe and New Zealand, which will run from December 26 to January 9.
