Shubman Gill, Gujarat Titans opener has said that people didn’t even consider his franchise among the top-4 teams, going into IPL 2022 season. Gujarat Titans stunned everyone by winning the IPL title in their maiden attempt.
Shubman Gill, who was a pre-draft pick by the Gujarat Titans for INR 8 crore, didn’t have the best campaign with the bat. The opening batter was pretty inconsistent this season, scoring runs in patches. He aggregated a total of 483 runs at an average of 34.50 and a strike rate of 132.33. On a personal level, Shubman Gill said that the season was quite ‘special’ to him.
Shubman Gill Thinks IPL 2022 Has Been Quite Special To Him And Reckons Gujarat Titans Wasn’t Considered To Even Qualify For Playoffs
Shubman Gill who has played 10 Tests and 3 ODI matches for India, was a regular starter for Kolkata Knight Riders since IPL 2018.
“I think the season has been quite special to me. I have had some really good moments and I’ve had my down as well, but that’s how our season goes. I think tough players and tough teams do last if they have the right mind,” the right-hander said on the franchise’s social media handles.
“Nobody considered GT a threat among the teams and nobody considered us even in the top four teams who would qualify. When people were saying that, it did not make sense to me because it does not matter what people say. The important thing was, once we got the momentum we never really let it slip away from us,” he added.
Shubman Gill, who was one of the star performers for Kolkata Knight Riders in the last four seasons of the Indian Premier League, was roped in by IPL debutant Gujarat Titans for Rs 8 crore, as one of the three draft picks ahead of the mega auctions.
Shubman Gill Rates IPL 2022 As A Special One After Ending Up On The Winning Side
Shubman Gill also labeled the IPL as a tournament where one gets to redeem himself multiple times. Shubman Gill’s case in the IPL 2022 season is the best example of the same. Gujarat Titans finished on top of the table with 20 points at the end of the league stage and then went on to beat Rajasthan Royals twice – first in the Qualifier 1 and then in the big final – to be crowned champions.
Hardik Pandya led Gujarat to a comprehensive seven-wicket victory in the IPL 2022 final in Ahmedabad. After restricting RR to 130-9, GT chased down the total in 18.1 overs. Hardik Pandya grabbed 3-17 with impeccable medium-fast bowling to restrict Rajasthan to 130-9 after Sanju Samson won the toss and chose to bat. The GT skipper then made a crucial 34 off 30 balls as Gujarat scored 133-3 in 18.1 overs.
“After ending up on the winning side, you obviously want to be better and want to improve on your mistakes. But if the team is doing well and you are not doing well, you can still take it and move on to the next match. Because IPL is one tournament where you actually get so many opportunities to redeem yourself as a player as well as a team. That’s why this tournament is so special,” Gill said.
In the IPL 2022 final against inaugural winners Rajasthan Royals, Shubman Gill finished things off in style by smashing a brilliant six. Shubman Gill scored 45 runs off 43 balls, including 3 fours and 1 six.
