Indian Team Is Much Better Than The Australian Team: VVS Laxman

Tipping India as favourites to win the upcoming Test series in Australia, former India batsman VVS Laxman warned the visitors to come up with collective effort if they want to achieve their maiden series win Down Under.

India and Australia are now all set to renew their rivalry in Tests. Both the teams, however, are entering the series on the back of contrasting fortunes. While India, barring the loss in England and South Africa, have looked unstoppable in Tests, Australian cricket is going through a turmoil. Australia will be without two of their batting mainstays  – David Warner and Steve Smith. Both the players along with rookie Cameron Bancroft are currently serving the ban imposed on them for the ball-tampering scandal.

Ever since the scandal, Australia’s performance has only deteriorated. They where whitewashed by England in ODIs, lost the T20I tri-series to final before losing to Pakistan again in Tests and T20Is. Recently, they lost to South Africa in ODIs and T20I at home.

On the other hand, India have looked almost unstoppable in Tests. Barring the losses in South Africa and England this year, the Virat Kohli-led side blew away every team that it faced.

And VVS Laxman did not mince his words as he called India the favourites to win the series in Australia. However, he pointed out that India’s hopes of winning their first-ever series in Australia could take a blow if the team fails to perform collectively.

“If you compare both the teams on paper, India are definitely favourites to win the Test series. Potentially the Indian team is much better than the Australian team. However, no team is ever weak in their own backyard. If Virat Kohli and the Indian team play to its potential, it can definitely beat this Australian team,” Laxman told IndiaTV.

He also had some suggestions for India. Laxman said that India need to put up a big total in the first innings and focus on team effort. In recent times during the tour of South Africa and England, India have failed to pounce upon opportunities and have also looked over-reliant on their skipper Virat Kohli.

“India need to keep two important things in mind… their batting in the first innings because you would like to put up big first innings total when you are playing abroad. You can’t rely on one or two batsmen for that and there has to be a collective contribution.

“Secondly, India have also failed to win the crucial moments in South Africa and England. This resulted in the respective series losses. So it will be really important for India to win such moments whenever they arrive in the next few weeks,” said the 134- Tests veteran.

The four-match Test series gets underway on December 6 in Adelaide. Perth, Melbourne and Sydney will host the last three Tests.
