IPL 2017: Kanpur police Arrest Under-19 Cricketer In Betting Scandal

In a sensational development, a bookie has claimed that the Indian Premier League match between Gujarat Lions and Delhi Daredevils that took place in Kanpur on Wednesday (May 10) was fixed.

According to reports, the Kanpur police,  on Thursday (May 11), arrested three bookies from a hotel where Gujarat Lions and Delhi Daredevils teams were staying after the conclusion of the match. The police reportedly found Rs 40.90 lakh cash and five mobile phones from the bookies.

The three accused have been identified as Ramesh Nayan Shah, a businessman from Thane Mumbai, Ramesh Kumar of Chunnigunj Kanpur and Vikas Chauhan of Pukhrayan, Kanpur Dehat.  The Kotwali police registered a case against the bookies and sent them to the jail after producing them in the court. Meanwhile, Ramesh Nayan Shah is also a former Under-19 cricketer from Maharashtra.

The room, meanwhile, was booked by Ramesh Kumar, who has a contract of putting up hoardings at the Green Park Stadium.  The hotel room was booked for Ramesh Nayan Shah. The police have claimed that Shah was in touch with Bunty, a racket kingpin from Ajmer, to whom he used to pass on information following which bets were placed.

During the interrogation, Shah sensationally claimed that two Gujarat Lions players were in touch with him. The cops claimed that Shah had sent a WhatsApp message to Bunty revealing both the players’ name and claimed that they were set and were ready to follow the bookies’ instructions. In another message, Shah mentioned that Gujarat Lions would lose the match even after scoring 200 runs.

Gujarat had gone on to lose the match in a dramatic fashion even after posting a mammoth 195. With 9 runs needed from the final over, Amit Mishra had sealed the game in Delhi’s favour by hitting two consecutive boundaries.

Meanwhile, a source has said that BCCI’s anti-corruption unit was aware of the whole bookie’s malicious intentions and was keeping an eye on them for three days. And the police arrested the trio only after being informed by the anti-corruption unit.

Meanwhile, the BCCI has quashed police’s claims that the match was fixed. The board admitted that the bookies had tried to fix the contest but has claimed that it was foiled.

“The Anti-Corruption Unit of the BCCI has been tracking activities of certain individuals, as a result of which, three suspects were arrested in Kanpur, on Thursday. The Uttar Pradesh Police Crime Branch could successfully foil the alleged betting attempts of the accused. This was an outcome of the ACU of the BCCI, having worked closely with various law enforcement agencies, who will continue further investigations, in this matter,” the BCCI’s statement said.
