IPL 2017: The IPL Is Ready And Ripe Now, Says R Ashwin After MS Dhoni’s Match-Winning Knock Against SRH

The tenth edition of the Indian Premier League might have begun around two weeks ago but it is safe to say that the season has begun on Saturday for MS Dhoni’s fans and his well-wishers.

The former India and Rising Pune Supergiant skipper had faced severe criticism in recent times for his dismal show with the bat in the ongoing tournament where he had managed just 61 runs in the first five matches.

In fact, even some former players like Sourav Ganguly and Michael Clarke had criticised the 35-year old for his indifferent performance with the bat.

But it was only a matter of time before the champion batsman shut down his critics and the much-anticipated moment finally arrived against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Saturday (April 22).

The right-handed batsman walked in to bat when Steve Smith was clean bowled by Rashid Khan with the scorecard reading 87 for two in 10.5 overs.

The Pune-based outfit still needed 90 runs from the final 55 balls and the dismissal of the in-form Rahul Tripathi and Ben Stokes only piled up the pressure on Dhoni.

Dhoni, whose strike rate of 87.14 this season was the worst among all batsmen having faced 50 deliveries, began slowly and had scored  17 from 15 balls when the fifteenth over ended.

Pressure built on Pune, as they needed 62 runs from the final five overs and the stage was perfectly set for the batting legend to mark his arrival.

In the 18th over, he hit Mohammed Siraj for a four and a six before blasting Bhuvneshwar Kumar for a couple of fours and a six in the penultimate over.

With 11 needed off the final over, Manoj Tiwary and Dhoni managed to score nine runs from the first five balls, leaving Dhoni to score two runs from the final delivery.

Then came the shot that each and every fan in this country was waiting for. The right-handed batsman hit the final ball for a beautiful four through the extra-cover to take his team home.

He remained unbeaten on 61 off just 34 balls with the help of five fours and three sixes.

Since that shot, the fans around the country are going gaga over the former India skipper and India spin spearhead R Ashwin is no different. The off-spinner, who is sidelined with an injury, took to Twitter to praise his teammate.

“Champion stuff from @msdhoni, another day at work. The IPL is ready and ripe now,” he tweeted.
