Chennai Super Kings‘ homecoming was tipped to be a grand occasion. And why not, after all the beloved team of the city was returning to their fortress after a couple of years.
The franchise along with Rajasthan Royals was banned for two years in 2015 on corruption charges.
The desperation to see the Men in Yellow only elevated after the Dhoni-led side beat defending champions Mumbai Indians in their comeback game.
However, the script did not unfold on the expected notes. While the Super Kings faithful thronged the stadium in large numbers, there were still many empty seats at the stand. The reason behind the same can be the political tension related to the Cauvery river water sharing dispute with Karnataka.
The Tamil Nadu are protesting over the staging of IPL matches in the state at a time when several protests are being organised. However, the fans braved all of it to support their team. But amidst all this, something unpleasant happened during the game against Kolkata Knight Riders.
A section of the crowd threw shoes on the field perhaps to express their displeasure over the game getting staged. The ground officials and police soon arrived near the boundary ropes to bring the situation under control. One of those shoes was reportedly thrown towards Ravindra Jadeja. But fortunately, none of the players received any injury.
Jadeja and Faf du Plessis, who was not playing in the match, then threw the shoes that fell inside the ground.
